Fic update!
Skating fic: I haven't worked on this since the last time I updated, mostly because we had to forego writing night this week onnacounta taking a house-buying seminar.
Giant row fic: 1,473 words! \o/ Of actual prose! From the beginning of the story! So that means I actually started, as opposed to sitting around poking at dialogue and trying to perfect my Victorian syntax. This is progress, trust me. Did I mention that I'm writing this thing in the third person? O_o;; That's a first for me and Holmes fic. It has to be, but I'm less confident about my writing in this genre when it's not first-person. For right now, I'm just getting down concepts within my sentences and I'll work on finessing the language later.
Life update!
Yes, so, that house-buying seminar we're taking... terrifying, or extremely terrifying? Also exhilarating. Last night was the "for god's sake get your finances under control before you try to buy a house" night, and tonight was "mortgage lingo and closing cost trauma" night. (I kid. Last night showed us how to budget and ascertain our financial situations before looking into getting approved for a loan, and tonight went through how one applies for a mortgage and all the programs that exist in the area, which is lots, for helping first-time buyers who don't make much money get really awesome deals. This is good, as that = us.)
I'm going out after work with my coworkers tomorrow, which will be another new experience. The last time I did this it was with the gang from the Writing Center, all of whom I really loved, and my coworkers now are kind of a whole lot different from the way I am. I think I'll have a decent time, though.

Date: 2009-09-17 11:57 pm (UTC)there are so many things that third person can express that first simply can't.
That's really true. It all comes down to that I need to have scenes with just Holmes and Lestrade and with just Holmes and Watson, and since I can't write this story from Holmes's POV, it has to be in third. It encourages me that Honest and Altogether is in the third person, because it's so brilliant and works so well that way.

Date: 2009-09-18 12:31 am (UTC)On the other side of things, I made the switchover this week from the baby I used to nanny for to her cousin, and I miss my little girl terribly. Word on the street is she cried ALL DAY her first day at daycare, which nigh on breaks my heart ('specially as she is, generally speaking, not a crier). But I still get to take care of her on Fridays, so I'll see her tomorrow, which is loveliness :)
Oh! And I watched the first two episodes of Starsky and Hutch and OMG, adorable. They are...they're just...adorable! I mean, in a 'we are toughguys' kind of way, but still, SO CUTE.

Date: 2009-09-18 12:41 am (UTC)I'm glad you'll get to see your little girl tomorrow! It's nice that you'll get to see her once a week :) Is her cousin as nice to take care of?
Heee, Starsky and Hutch makes me SO happy. Adorable is the perfect word for them! The later seasons are really good too, but I love their characterizations earlier on the best. They're so lovely with each other, and so tender sometimes and so best-friend-bullying others, and it's delightful.

Date: 2009-09-18 01:10 am (UTC)Said cousin is only six weeks old, at present, so it's a very different kind of experience from my 16-month-old. He's cuddly and has that new-baby-smell and is sweet when he smiles, but it's not the same as spending my day with a kid I can actually meaningfully interact with, and, in particular, who can express affection. Tomorrow I'm going to have to stock up on hugs big time!
And thank you for turning me on to them, really :) They have SO much chemistry, in the best possible way. I think it's very possible that my opinion on them is being colored by the fact that I found them through you--I watch them do something just utterly sweet and affectionate and perfect and go "Awww, with emotion like that, who cares whether or not they're sleeping together?" Even when it's something that my slashy forebrain would usually pounce on (like them spending a surprising amount of the first episode taking off their clothes *fans self*), my brain only goes as far as "Maybe there'll be hugs!" You're clearly rubbing off on me, my dear XD

Date: 2009-09-18 01:57 am (UTC)Kids are great!
Yippee! More fic coming! I don't wait to write it all out myself, though. I know where I'm going, and let the characters play out the drama, chapter by chapter! For me, it is less stressful!

Date: 2009-09-18 02:21 am (UTC)Thank you! Normally, I'm with ya on writing by the chapter. In this particular case, however, there's a specific (very simple) reason for posting it by the day, and so it needs to get written all at once. Believe me, I'd be thrilled to have started posting chapters as I've finished them!
