Where I've seen Ciarán Hinds before
May. 17th, 2009 01:42 pmAhahahahaha I KNEW IT!
Ciarán Hinds, who I've seen most recently playing an incredibly kickass Caesar in the HBO series Rome (er, I liked him a little better before he slapped around Servilia), was Edward Rochester in the 1997 Jane Eyre miniseries I mentioned about a million years ago when I was watching a bunch of Jane Eyre movies to see how they compared. My verdict at the time, not having seen the Toby-Stephens-as-Rochester BBC version yet (which is my favorite), was that while Ciarán Hinds is not so pretty to look at, his energy and presence and passion made the perfect Rochester. Considering that Rochester-in-my-head is way more physically attractive than he's supposed to be, I imagine that Hinds probably played him as close to the book as anyone has yet. I need to see it again, now that I recognize him, because I've really gotten to like him in Rome and that would make his Rochester even more awesome.
Aww, the Jane Eyre he's in isn't the one with Colin Jeavons. Bummer. *goes to see which one that is* Bwah, it's the one with Timothy Dalton O_o I haven't seen that one. Mostly because it's the one with Timothy Dalton. I should, though, because, well, Colin Jeavons, and maybe Timothy Dalton would surprise me.
Also, Rome = WIN, and I'll tell you why in two words: "Vorenus" and "Pullo". I mean, aside from the costumes and the political/personal machinations and the historical accuracy (so I'm told by the wonderful
_melisande_ and my wife, who should know). So it's really made of all-around win, in fact. I need some icons.

Date: 2009-05-17 08:19 pm (UTC)Timothy Dalton just has too much of that tooth-sparkle look to me for Rochester.

Date: 2009-05-18 08:36 pm (UTC)You're right - he does.

Date: 2009-05-17 06:24 pm (UTC)Perhaps I'll try to watch the Ciarán Hinds version sometime though, despite his ugly-as-anything mustache. (Toby Stephens is my favorite too; he has a wildness or ruggedness about him in that movie which I can imagine the other characters would see as not conventionally handsome; yet he is still devilishly attractive to a modern viewer.)

Date: 2009-05-17 08:22 pm (UTC)*cracks up* Seriously XD I don't have anything against him, but he doesn't at all have the look I'd like for Rochester. Toby Stephens, on the other hand... guh. Your icon, by the way! Eee! And I need to see the Ciarán Hinds one, as I have a feeling his acting-awesomeness would eclipse the ugly mustache XD

Date: 2009-05-17 07:43 pm (UTC)I really loved his Rochester actually. I also loved him in Rome (minus the Servilla thing, as you said) because he was a very cool Caesar and I kinda love Caesar too because I'm a big history nerd! Even though Rome is not an incredibly accurate programme.
Yeah, I've never seen Timothy Dalton version either, even though OMG Colin is in it, therefore it would totally be worth putting up with Timothy Dalton!
I actually watched The French Lieutenant's Woman just because Colin Jeavons was in it. Even though I hated it. Yeah, I am officially a very sad and tragic person ;)

Entirely XD That's how I feel about a lot of the actors I like, actually *laughs* If they're in stuff, it's worth putting up with other people.

Date: 2009-05-17 08:37 pm (UTC)And despite being incredibly underrated Colin has been in a frightening amount of stuff, some good, some not so good, but all of it worth watching just to see him.
A friend of mine actually text me the other day and said "I just saw that guy on the telly, the one you always talk about who I'd never heard of"...I'm building a strange reputation for myself!

Date: 2009-05-18 12:25 am (UTC)Rome is absolutely and utterly made of win. It only reinforced my already-established desire to name my son Octavion, should I ever have one, which is a terrible thing to do to a child but I don't care because seriously, OCTAVION. As much as I love Vorenus and Pullo, the Julii are my favorites, Atia and Octavia and Octavion. And Agrippa, who you haven't met yet (unless you started in the middle) but who is adorable beyond all belief. Possibly the best ten seconds ever put on film happen between Octavion and Cleopatra in the very last episode... oh, so GOOD! I'll be looking forward to your posts on it as you make your way through the series :) Clearly this calls for hauling out ye olde DVDs...

Date: 2009-05-18 01:31 am (UTC)He's also in "Calendar Girls", which I ADORED, and in "Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day", which I haven't watched yet but we currently have out from Netflix.
It killed me when I realized that he was playing Caesar in Rome, because I knew how that was going to end. :-/
