Okay, time for coherence. Maybe.
Jul. 17th, 2005 09:57 amI suppose I should have known that reading for an entire day and doing essentially nothing else would require a sacrifice of good sleep the next night. Anyway.
( Thoughts on HBP, spoilers like whoa )
I need to watch something fluffy now. Or else write my Candy is Dandy ficlet, which I was wanting to do all yesterday.

*watches bits of the Ian McKellen Macbeth*
Macduff/Malcolm OTP!!
Only because Roger Rees plays the gayest Malcolm EVAR. I swear all that talk about wanting to shag every woman in the country to throw Macduff off was also major overcompensation.
I've been thinking about creating a Shakespeare art community. Because I can't find one. For people who like drawing or seeing or displaying or finding pictures of Shakespearean characters. That would mean I'd have to get off my butt and draw that Macduff and Ross picture I've been planning, though... *shifty look*
Going to work on
hak42's picture today, I think.

Why I love Kenneth Branagh's Hamlet
Jul. 17th, 2005 03:50 pmWatching Hamlet now, as I can't draw and watch subtitles at the same time.
Reasons why this movie makes me a very happy little fangirl:
- Hamlet, very subtly, touches Horatio's face when they first meet
- Laertes is actually jovial when with his family, and gives the impression that he could even be a little silly with Ophelia sometimes
- Laertes gives his sister this great "Oh god, here comes Dad" look when Polonius approaches
- You can see the doting adoration whenever Laertes looks at Ophelia
- Polonius is absolutely villainous to Ophelia. The pointy devil-horn eyebrows don't hurt either
- Hamlet and Horatio = so grabby
- Mister Down-to-Earth Horatio has the greatest OMGWTF reaction ever when the ghost first says "swear!"
- Gerard Depardieu, playing Reynaldo, gives Polonius the best "You are SUCH a loser, but you're paying me lots so I don't care" looks over the top of his cigar
- Hamlet ranting in fast forward about his own inability to act is way too funny
- Let me reiterate about Hamlet and Horatio's grabbiness
- Straightjacket!Ophelia = win.
- Poor Horatio is delegated to running around the castle after unhinged women in straightjackets while Hamlet is away
- I never noticed this before, but Horatio lets Ophelia go into see Laertes when he comes back. Her nurse was about to stop her.
- Gertrude is so wonderfully vapid, and so good at telling people horrible things while obviously not caring at all
- Laertes rips my fucking heart out
- And throws a Bible at Hamlet's head from Ophelia's grave. Best most-likely-ad-libbed use of props ever.
- Hamlet shoves Horatio an awful lot for somebody who's supposed to be his best friend. But at least the shoving is usually preceded by touching.
- Horatio's desperately worried expression for most of the last half of the movie
Have given up on using Deepest Sender as an LJ client, as it doesn't process html. Or I haven't figured out how to make it do so.

Whoa, I found something redeemable about the Saiyuki anime.
The dub is fucking hysterical.
Of course, it departs wildly from the actual Japanese script, but since the actual Japanese script is very rarely funny, this can be seen as a good thing. Or at least, something to amuse me when I'm
caitirin-less. Most of the funny comes from the fact that they swear a lot, and call each other "dude" a lot, which is probably horribly messing up their characters, but it had me rolling on the floor. And I like Gojyo's voice. It's sexy.
The only thing that slightly irks me is that they REALLY changed Hakkai's personality in the dub, since he swears occasionally - less than the rest of them, admittedly - and Hakkai in the Japanese is so uber-polite that my excitement at being able to understand him (he uses -masu forms) sometimes gets overreached because he goes into humble or super-polite language that I learned but don't exactly remember anymore. And I like Hakkai; for some reason, he reminds me of Kirov. Or I associate him with Kirov. Probably the latter.
The sad part is that the animation is so absolutely awful that watching the English dub distracts from it, whereas the Japanese doesn't. Maybe if I was fluent it would, but... I'm not ^^;;
Also, I think it's obligatory that I like Kougaiji, because his Japanese voice actor is the same guy who did Saionji. I can't believe I didn't recognize the voice before reading the cast list >_< *bad Utena fangirl, bad*
Off to bed to reread the manga to see if it's worth buying again. I really like the charactersand their mad angst... so maybe.
