Trick or Treater count - 2

Only [livejournal.com profile] caitirin saw them; she reported that they were dressed up like a skeleton and an insane clown. Meanwhile, [livejournal.com profile] minyan and I were washing pumpkin seeds to make into yummy spicy baked pumpkin seeds :) We carved pumpkins (Minyan made a pooka! It's so cute! Caitirin did a lovely moon and stars, and I did an angry fangy face with bags under its eyes) and made caramel apples and talked about writing and movies and old television shows :)

It was an all-around lovely evening. Now it's time for bed!

Thank you both - it was a lovely long restful evening (and the pumpkin seeds are really good too!)And there's nothing like real candle light. Yay.

I'm really glad you had fun :) It was a great evening! We put the pumpkins out on the table on the porch tonight and lit them :)

Actually in our town they have Trick or Treating on the 30th. Which I find phenomenally stupid.

But that's what they do.

Strange~! What is their reasoning?

They call it Beggar's Night and I'm not sure what the reasoning is, it hearkens back to some old tradition no doubt.

No, they have Trick or Treating in our town on the 30th. For some reason, they always do it on weird dates around here O.o I'm not sure why! It always was just the way it was when I was little, but now I'm kind of like "Huh?"

I believe that the "reasoning" behind it was "if they don't treat you on the 30th, you go back and trick them on the 31th". Nowadays, that's known as vandalism. ;)

Wow, I didn't know that was the real reasoning! It's been like that for that long?

As far as I know. I know that when my parents were kids, they didn't go out on Halloween; they went out on the night before Thanksgiving and called it "Beggar's Night". My grandmother and my father always called the trick-or-treaters "Beggars". (Your)Grammy said that she thought that the tradition of going out on Halloween must have been in effect in other parts of the country, but she didn't think it came here until during WWII, when lots of people moved into the Village while stationed at the Navy Yard (and thus, were from other parts of the country) and brought the tradition with them. Wikipedia says that trick-or-treating started in the western states and made its way eastward, stalling with the sugar rationing in 1942, and starting up again in the late 1940's, so she must have been right about that. :)
