Written to go with [livejournal.com profile] caitirin's submissions to [livejournal.com profile] 200for50.

Part I and Part II

After about fifteen minutes of waiting, the supply clerks brought out several bags containing the standard mission kit and the other items Mei and Cai had requested. One of the clerks pressed down on two folded down-stuffed coats to compress them and then piled a bag on top. He handed Mei a plastic card.

"Now, I would never want to say anything about your partner," he began, giving his coworker a look that said ‘because she’d shoot me,’ read on! )

All the cool kids are doing it! [livejournal.com profile] dakegra says I have to! I don't want to be the only one on the bus LJ with no Prompt Gathering Post! We could call them PGPs or something.

So, in the words of Its Creator:

"Here we come to the crux of the matter, dear reader. If you would be so kind as to furnish me with a first line, I will write a short snipettette for you."

This one's for Mei. If you've forgotten who Mei is, here's my tag list for her: Mei things

You can use Cai or Pele with Mei, if you want, says [livejournal.com profile] caitirin. Mei has various stages which it might be useful to compile here:

Take it away!

So, today I wanted to ask a question in class, but I was less inclined to, because I knew it was a question that would be obvious to some of the students who are more experienced in this particular subject area. I knew that whatever the answer, if I was aware of the historical context, I would be satisfied and accept it. But I didn't want to ask it in class, because grad school has put The Great Fear Of Looking Intellectually Inferior into me where it really hasn't been for years (boo, I say) and so I went and asked the professor beforehand, which I had no embarrassment doing. And it was nicely cleared up for me.

And then I was validated by having it brought up in class and an Interesting Conversation ensuing.

Randomly, I've begun wondering just WHAT my criteria for locking posts was. I thought it was real-lifey identifying stuff, but apparently not, because then I'd lock anything that talked about my classes. I also wonder how paranoid I ought to be.

Anyway, now I'm going to talk about why I decided to keep some of my characters vampires and why I decided to make some of them merely (merely?) immortal, as [livejournal.com profile] caitirin mentioned we did.

It takes me a while to remember how many vampires I even HAVE. )

About three pages of it.

Mei's gonna keeeeeeeell me.

But
I don't care, because she needed to be picked at. She used to be too
new to know anything about, and she wouldn't let me poke at her brains,
but now... bwaaahahaha!

This is kind of... a companion piece to
the bit [livejournal.com profile] caitirin wrote about how Cai's developing a crush on Mei. I'd been
thinking, after she said that, that I needed to write some stuff about
Mei to get her a little bit more straightened out in my own head, but I
couldn't think of a format to do it in. It didn't occur to me that I
could just write about it, here, instead of having to make up some
situation in-character. I've been reading some of the chat logs that RC
and I've done with Mei and Cai, and it just keeps getting clearer.

Mei introspection )

I had an interesting Cai-and-Mei dream last night, and I thought I
ought to write it down, because it was kinda cool ^_^ And [livejournal.com profile] caitirin told
me to.

In
this dream (which was in manga/graphic novel form, by the way) Mei was
staying in a hotel with a double or queen-sized bed. It was the middle
of the night, and she was asleep or just lazing about in bed, and Cai
showed up at the door. Cai was grouchy and upset, so Mei told her to
come in and get some sleep, and Cai got into the bed with her. She was
facing away from Mei because she didn't want to talk, with her arm
under her head, and she was crying blood tears. Mei sat up and said,
"Let's do it. If you want, we can do it all night, and no one will see
us." Then she gathered Cai in her arms and they sat like that, with Mei
holding her, for the rest of the night.

This was meant, by
whoever drew the thing for [livejournal.com profile] caitirin and me, to make people think they
were going to have sex and then there were some blank panels, and then
Mei rocking Cai. So it ended up being kind of funny and adorable.

SO almost time to leave.

This page is SO bloody useful.

I definitely just found Mei's family crest.

Shibata is down there on the second row.

I've
got all these samurai running about in my head because of my history
class, and the most interesting idea that during the Warring States
period (which ended in about 1600 with the unification of the country
by Oda Nobunaga, Toyotomi Hideyoshi, and Tokugawa Ieyasu) the daimyo
and other high-ranking lords had very close emotional relationships
with their retainers. According to my class, this changed during the
Tokugawa period because the lords now concerned themselves with
learning and cultural things, as opposed to warfare, and didn't spend
time with their vassals nearly as much since all the daimyo had to be
going back and forth to Edo for that alternate attendance thing. So,
lengthy explanation equals samurai in my head.

There's two, the retainer-type younger one, Honda Masahiko (See
the Honda family crest, third line down) and his lord, who has yet to
receive a name and a concrete rank. He can't be an actual daimyo
because there were records of all of them -_-;; And I've been looking
up names all day. I've found a few that I like, but none of those are
actually families on this page, and I want to have family crests and
kanji and things. This page also has the kanji writings for various
samurai names, although both the computers I've been on today don't
have the capacity to view kanji.

So I'm finding out all sorts of interesting things about Mei by doing
the reading for my History of Japan class. For example, her family was
opposed to (well, ended up being opposed to... worked with at one time)
Toyotomi Hideyoshi, who was the ruling power before Tokugawa overthrew
him and changed everything. That would make it logical that her family
would have sided with the Tokugawa clan, and would have been one of the
samurai who lived under him.

Also,
Tokugawa put a strict prohibition on anyone travelling outside of
Japan, and the only traders that were allowed to come into the country
were the Dutch, and only at a small island port near Nagasaki. So Mei
would have had to jump one of those ships and taken it to Holland, and
then take another one to France. She'd have to do the same thing when
she came back to Japan, unless the ban on trade had been lifted by
then... which I don't think it was, since she returned before the
Bakamatsu and the reinstatment of the emperor.

No fun if it's not illegal, right, Mei?

Mei - Damn straight.
