Part I and Part II
After about fifteen minutes of waiting, the supply clerks brought out several bags containing the standard mission kit and the other items Mei and Cai had requested. One of the clerks pressed down on two folded down-stuffed coats to compress them and then piled a bag on top. He handed Mei a plastic card.
"Now, I would never want to say anything about your partner," he began, giving his coworker a look that said ‘because she’d shoot me,’ "but I know the odds of you two needing new equipment. Here’s a charge card for L.L. Bean’s, which is an outdoor equipment and clothing supplier up in Freeport, Maine. It’s only got a limited amount on it, so be aware of that, but if for some reason you get your coats destroyed or you need tents or backpacks or shoes, they’re your best bet."
Mei turned the card over, looking at the little painted landscape on the front. "Thanks. Can I get one of you to help me lug this to the car?"
The other supply clerk loaded up with bags and followed Mei out to the car lot. She opened up the back of a dark grey Jetta and he helped her shove their equipment in.
A few minutes later, Mei pulled up in beside Cai in the car lot. The back of the car was stuffed full of fleecy fabric, duffle bags, and bundles hidden under blankets. She rolled down the window. "I think I’ve got everything from those guys that we’ll need. They even gave me a credit card for some place we can buy replacement stuff." Mei leaned back in her seat, then forward, peering around Cai. "Where are you hiding the case file?"
