Necklaces and old memes
Sep. 30th, 2006 11:11 pmWe had a really nice day today ^_^ We went to a craft fair in a nearby town because somebody from my high school (or middle school, more like... she transferred somewhere at the beginning of high school, I think) was selling her handmade bags and jewelry there. We got some really beautiful earrings. I also got a necklace with
caitirin's help :3 It's an sphere of amber on a very nice pendant, about the size of a small marble. I really love it.
When I was little, I used to dig through my great aunt's attic - she took care of old friends of hers and one of them had a metric ton of old cheap jewelry that she gave to my great aunt, and I always got to pick through it when I was there. I had this absolutely magpie-like obsession with shiny necklaces and pins, even if they would be really kitschy by grown-up standards. There was this one that was a solid sphere of glass, about as big as a nickel, which had a mustard seed suspended in it. I thought it was the coolest, most magicalmystical looking thing ever. I even wrote it into stories, I thought it was so cool. At any rate, I lost it, and I have no idea where it is now... but this necklace reminds me of it (only this one is of better quality). Squee!
I have all these awesome "five things meme" suggestions that I haven't gotten to yet. So here's one.
( Five Most Embarrassing things Kishi has done while with Flynn and in public. )
( Five phrases Touga uses to say that he has 'scored' with a boy/girl/vibrating object XD )
caitirin has been a baking fiend today - we made a peach tart (omgsogood), and also some muffins for a couple of our friends who have been having a real crappy couple of days. Staying within my points is going to be fun this week ^^;; I'm back to the number I had when I was trying to lose weight, since when I reached my goal, I added about 5 a day and gained a few pounds back over the next two weeks. Oh well, I'm used to that schedule.

TTD, as
redatt coined!
I find this surprisingly near the mark.

( Personality Report )
Holy crap, we just watched Interstella 5555, the Daft Punk and Leiji Matsumoto music video movie thing. It was ridiculously awesome. Pure, unadulterated enjoyment. And cool music. And ZILCH dialogue. Very minimal sound effects. So cool. I could really get into Matsumoto's style of drawing women. Men, yeah, pretty cool; short guys, not so much. This is SHINY, too. It's 2003, which I didn't expect, because all Matsumoto's Galaxy Express and Harlock stuff is older. The animation is very crisp. Squee!

Meme and some Dido
Sep. 1st, 2006 01:01 pmFirst of all, the Five Things meme that's been going around! Because
caitirin is having way too much fun for me to not get in on it.
Five Things in a List meme
Here's how it works: Give me a "five things" list prompt and I will write you a list and post it in my journal. You can ask about any five things anyone did or did not do, five objects, five instances, or anything else in the fandom of your choice: original characters, Utena, Gundam Wing, Harry Potter, Sailor Moon, X-Files, Firefly, Weiss Kreuz, Rurouni Kenshin, Lord of the Rings, Shakespeare... and probably anything else that you know I like but have left it out here.
That out of the way:
Is he gone?
Ay, but he'll come again, he cannot go.
He loves me too too well to serve me so.
Yet he that in my sight would not relent
Will, being absent, be obdurate still.
By this is he got to the water-side;
And see, the soldiers take him by the hand,
But he shrinks back, and now, rememb'ring me,
Returns amain: welcome, welcome, my love!
But where's Aeneas? Ah, he's gone, he's gone!
-- Christopher Marlowe, Dido, Queen of Carthage act 5, scene 1, lines 183-92
My lover's gone
His boots no longer by my door
He left at dawn
And as I slept I felt him go
Returns no more
I will not watch the ocean
My lover's gone
No earthly ships will ever bring him home again
Bring him home again
- Dido, My Lover's Gone

Neat meme!
1. Delve into your blog archive.
2. Find your 23rd post.
3. Find the fifth sentence.
4. Post the text of the sentence in your blog along with these instructions
Shishou is the word for someone's swordmaster, and that's what Kenshin calls Hiko.
From this post, incidentally on the 23rd of November, in which my mother and I discuss what sort of pronouns the Star Wars characters would use or call each other in a Japanese dub.

Book meme as a break from researchywork
Aug. 3rd, 2006 03:29 pmI am SUCH a slug lately. My research isn't even that strenuous, but I can't get myself to work on it as much as I think I should (though, as I mentioned before, I probably think I have to do a great deal more than I actually am expected to do, so it'll all work out).
Anyway, meme!
1. One book that changed your life?
Man, how could I choose? LotR has shaped my internal fantasy drive ever since I was 8, but I think Redwall, by Brian Jacques (and the series' fandom) has had the most impact upon me as a writer. And I think this was because before I started writing in a Redwall RPG, I had no idea one COULD write using other people's characters or that one could make up a new character to fit into someone else's world. That started the whole fanfic phase, without which I don't think I could have realized that I like writing my own characters so much better than those of already-established writers.
2. One book you have read more than once?
Lady of the Forest, by Jennifer Roberson. You wouldn't BELIEVE what I missed the first time around.
3. One book you would want on a desert island?
I'll take my compiled Amber series by Robert Zelazny, please. I could read that, the first half especially, over and over. Once I get to the end, I'm ready to start over again!
4. One book that made you laugh?
The Once and Future King, by T.H. White. That book is so amazing in some places.
5. One book that made you cry?
I very rarely cry reading books (so rarely that I can't remember an instance). I may have cried when Gandalf died, but I was, you know, eight. I don't remember. Inkheart gave me goosebumps, though. Does that count?
6. One book you wish had been written?
More Amber things by Zelazny, preferably focusing on Julian.
7. This question was omitted, apparently.
With black tape and all that? Wow. Mysterious!
8. One book you are currently reading?
I actually JUST finished Inkheart, by Cornelia Funke, this afternoon. I think I'm going to take a break and read something else before I start the sequel, though. The only other thing that I'm in the middle of (that I've picked up since last fall) is Shakespeare, In Fact by Irvin Leigh Matus, which is *gasp* nonfiction. But very amusing and interesting nonfiction.
9. One book you have been meaning to read?
It WAS Inkheart, up until a week ago ^_^ Actually, I've been meaning to read the Exiles series by Melanie Rawn.
*needs to upload more userpics!*

dakegra says I have to! I don't want to be the only one on the bus LJ with no Prompt Gathering Post! We could call them PGPs or something.
So, in the words of Its Creator:
"Here we come to the crux of the matter, dear reader. If you would be so kind as to furnish me with a first line, I will write a short snipettette for you."
This one's for Mei. If you've forgotten who Mei is, here's my tag list for her: Mei things
You can use Cai or Pele with Mei, if you want, says

Jun. 29th, 2006 10:06 amAtashi meme sheep desu. I've been meaning to put this up, and I keep forgetting!
Just sent about a dozen similar e-mails off to Reading Centers all across the country, asking them what they're up to! Maybe one or two will even respond! I'm not too hopeful, as it IS summer, but this would look good in my research.
Memosity wherin I get you to talk about yourself!
Reply to this meme, and I'll pick one of your LJ interests. You tell me a whole bunch of stuff about it, and we all learn a bit more.
And it's not part of the meme, but I like talking about myself so you can also pick one of my interests and I shall bore you to tears babbling about it!

Jun. 26th, 2006 09:46 pmI really could use the Armor of Dido and the Axe of Saionji. Saw plenty of shrines to Shelley and Coleridge while I was in there, and a nice epitaph to Haibane Renmei!

Feb. 28th, 2006 09:06 pmCulinary: | Fried potato matter. Of just about any sort. | I love french fries, tater tots, and just about anything else made of potato, fried or not... except French-Canadian potato pie, but that's all right ^^;; |
Literary: | Saiyuki. | The art and the translation is so fantastic that it makes up for the plot sometimes. And the plot really improves after the first couple volumes, but there's so much gratuitous angst. |
Audiovisual: | At the moment, classic Star Trek. | Really, Leonard Nimoy is the only one with a speck of acting ability, but it's just so DELIGHTFUL. |
Musical: | Gackt like whoa. | I think Gackt is very talented, so this isn't really a guilt... but whenever I mention it to a Japanese person, I get the impression that I ought to be about 14 in order to like Gackt. |
Celebrity: | Johnny Depp | I'll see anything he's in, just because he's in it. |
I decided not to tag anyone, because most of the people I know have done this already and I'm behind the times :)
School is schoolish, and nothing much of excitement is happening around now. Same old same old, I guess. I read in almost every moment of my free time today, between 8:00 and 6:30, and I'm still not done with what I was supposed to read for tomorrow e_e *shrug*

LJ can leave you feeling really close to people that actually you know surprisingly little about. So, here's your chance to ask me something you think you should know about me... something that should be obvious, but you have no idea about. Ask away.
Then post this in your LJ and find out what people don't know about you.

Okay, I am SO MADLY IN LOVE with Kyou Kara Maoh. It's adorable. The concept is so SILLY - Yuri, ordinary Japanese schoolboy, gets flushed down a toilet and ends up in a fantasy-land where he's the Demon King - but it's such an wonderful show. And today they apparently made the very common anime mistake of letting the interns do the animation e_e but it was SO CUTE. I really love anime and manga where the characters act like they despise each other but are constantly forced to acknowledge their affection/protectiveness/loyalty to one another. Reminds me of Saiyuki, in some ways. Which I've been rereading, and have noticed things - character developments, plot twists - that are really quite skillful (omfgdoctorni). Anyway, Kyou Kara Maoh. It, of course, helps that EVERY male character somehow manages to find his way, willing or not, practically into Yuri's pants. And what a name for a boy. Yuri. *snicker* I really love it, though. So much. Gwendal is like the Hiko of the show, with the >:| face and the ¬_¬ face and the "I am so damn grumpy and I hate everyone!", and he knits and loves cute plushie keychains and is all "Well, Your Majesty, if you're cold, you better snuggle up against me, because we sure can't have you being cold. But I'm gruff. Rrr." HELL yes.
/fannish babblings
It's been a while since I've had so much FUN watching an anime. I really loved Haibane Renmei and Last Exile, but it wasn't... you know... delightful. It didn't make me laugh. It was gorgeous and awesome, but not like this. Samurai Champloo is a little like this is, but without the blatant slashiness.
Whee!

And getting some memage out of the way!
When you see this in a friend's journal, post a poem!
( Carnelian, aka, Byron being sappy with cute little boyfriend )
And...
When you see this in a friend's journal, quote Shakespeare!
Since all and sundry would probably kill me for quoting Laertes Angst, as I am more often wont to do, here's something you haven't heard from me ten frillion times.
Marcus:
You sad-fac’d men, people and sons of Rome,
By uproar sever’d, like a flight of fowl
Scatter’d by winds and high tempestuous gusts,
O! let me teach you how to knit again
This scatter’d corn into one mutual sheaf,
These broken limbs again into one body;
Lest Rome herself be bane unto herself,
And she whom mighty kingdoms curtsy to,
Like a forlorn and desperate castaway,
Do shameful execution on herself.
- Titus Andronicus
Poor Marcus. His family's looooooony.
Anyway, to make this post even longer (whee!) I had a lot of dreams last night. Most of them were really annoying - some scary hobo man trying to steal all the stuff out of my grandmother's house, and some lady badmouthing my dad while I'm trying to vote - but it was all kind of made up for by the fact that I had an angsty fanfic Saitou dream.
( Return of the Revenge of the Bad Fanfic Dreams )
Man, I have a cough-and-scratchy-throat.
I REALLY don't want to do any work this morning. I think I'll goof off until I have to go to work at 10.

A definition question for all you fandom-types out there: Is RPS (Real-Person Slash) absolutely literal, or does it carry a connotation of slashing people who you don't know are gay? What I really want to know is whether it's still called RPS if you're slashing two gay people who are together. For example, would it be RPS if someone wrote a fanfic or drew fanart about Ian McKellan and his partner? What about in a historical context, when people have been dead for a long time? Is Richard II/Blondel RPS? Why I'm asking is because I've started drawing a picture inspired by Byron's Carnelian poetry, which is about himself and, for lack of a better term, his college boyfriend. The definition won't change whether I draw it or not, but I was curious. To me, RPS has a distinct "probably not really gay" flavor, but then again I've only seen it in the context of the LotR actors (besides McKellan, who no one slashes, weirdly enough).
