I've been getting anonymous comments in the past few days on my Holmes fic, calling me out on my Victorian inaccuracies. So far one has been polite (they assumed I didn't know the meaning of the word I was using, whereas I did, I just apparently wasn't clear when using it) and the other was somewhat snotty but correct. I don't mind when people correct me, especially if they're right; in fact, I'd like to be told when I'm using a word wrong or I have a fact mistaken. But I don't appreciate snark, and I'd kind of rather that they wouldn't comment anonymously. Unless, of course, they're not signed up on LJ at all, in which case I don't know how they found my fic. Interesting!

Yeah, it would have behooved them to be more polite...as to how they found your fic, LJ public entries do get indexed for Google search or they might've followed a link from another site. Google your LJ username, you'll see :)

Ah, I never thought about Google! *laughs* It's kind of obvious, though, so I should have.

I'd not have thought abt it either, but I had someone comment once who wasn't on LJ, asking me abt one of the poems I posted--and when I asked her how she came across my post, she said she searched for the poem on Google ;)

I had anon comments turned off in my LJ, btw, as they were all spam...

I'm wondering whether I should turn mine off too XD But I don't get rude anonymous comments very often. It just seems like all of a sudden I have lots of non-LJ people visiting!

Oh, I've never gotten _rude_ anon comments...it was spam I was getting.

There used to be reasons for allowing anons but now it seems like a way to encourage people who don't have the balls to comment under their 'own' names. I don't approve of public con-crit anyway. It's petty-minded.

Yeah, if somebody asks for it, I can see giving polite con-crit, but I'd never volunteer it unless I was really close to the author and I knew they would want it. I can understand if it's a "Hey, I just wanted to ask if you meant X when you said Y?" sort of thing, but when people put it in terms of "MAN, aren't you stupid!" I really feel it's unnecessary.

I meant to say - if you don't allow search engines to include your LJ, your posts shouldn't show up in a Google search. Mine never have. But if someone saw your name elsewhere it would be easy to find you here.

They found your fic because the POWER OF SHEER AWESOME just caaalllllllled to them. *nods sagely*

Those are the kinds of reviews that annoy me the most, though, so I agree. I don't mind correction if I'm legitimately wrong, but when it's done superciliously or sarcastically and behind the shield of anonymity it just drives me up the wall, more so than a real flame would. I think the only other kind that irritates me more are those people whose sole purpose in reviewing is to tell you you're wrong regarding something you said because it differs from established (most likely drooling teenage) Fanon. I've taken to putting disclaimers at the beginning of my fics asking people to not bother telling me if I differ from JoeBob's novelization or some random radio play or whatever.

*hugs you* Anyhow, your fics are amazing, so let them be insufferable know-it-alls. Most likely it's some guy in his thirties still living at home, with nothing better to do than to sit in his Marvel Comics t-shirt in front of Mom's computer and read fanfiction all day while the rest of the world works for a living. :P

B'awwwww, thank you :) *hugs* I wasn't annoyed by the commenter who was polite and asked if I knew the difference between definitions of the term I used. That was fine. The other one was just snarky and superior, and seriously, what's the point? I'm only going to be irritated, not impressed by their knowledge.

The wrath of Motherhood and Bad Karma shall descend upon them! Cowards! It's one thing to post anonymously - and quite another to do it snarkily.

You may want to turn off anon comments on your LJ.

Also, did you realize that if you Google your real name, your LJ comes up? Just discovered that. >_< I don't know why that happens ... it doesn't with me. Only telling you because you might want to lock posts that you don't want just anyone to randomly see.

I would call them out, saying exactly this!! You do not mind being corrected. You do mind anonymity and snark. Tell them.
