Pile of art
Apr. 16th, 2010 09:46 pmI haven't scanned my drawings in like forever! I've been drawing a lot lately, too. Instead of writing, apparently. I have a smaller sketchbook that I'm filling with random things, and
astillac let me use her watercolor pencils! They RAWK.
And this week I even did another Illustration Friday!
astillac reminded me to get drawing them again. I'm glad she did :D
First, my Illustration Friday picture for this week. The prompt was "linked".

I'm not sure that what I was trying to do is clear enough, although given that "linked" is the prompt, I hope it is. In case it's not: the Japanese snow maiden-inspired girl being is linked to the moon, and her coloring changes with its phases.
I think this next one started as an Illustration Friday, but I don't know what the prompt was O_o I wanted to draw it, anyway, because a lyric from a Hem song inspired me.
astillac helped me with anatomy. Oh, that reminds me! Artistic nekkidness under the cut.

I still can't draw very realistic boobies. They don't look squishy at all. What kind of lesbian am I? Oh well, these are better than I would've done without
astillac's musculature reference book. I used references like whoa for this picture! Clock keys, and clockwork, and boobies, and all sorts.
The Hem lyrics that inspired this were these:
Gonna waste some time with you
And let this world go
Keep my heart
Idle
And now, something in color! Gasp! It's my first experiment with watercolor pencils. The scanner doesn't pick up the green too well, but it was sort of a messy picture anyway.

Mermaids mean I don't have to draw legs! Haha! Watercolor pencils are awesome because you color with them, and then use a wet brush to go over them, and they turn into watercolors and blend and do the cool things that watercolors do. This is on watercolor paper, if you couldn't tell. All knobby.
Now for the sketches. I've been on a magical girl kick lately, so expect some of those, and some of
caitirin's characters, and some fan art of The Moonstone and Zelda, aaaaand... some other stuff.

It's Cade! He's a reluctant wizard boy (well, sort of) and he belongs to
caitirin. I tried to draw him uncertain and annoyed and introverted.

Jenni, who is also
caitirin's, from the same story as Cade. She's less reluctant and more ass-kicking. I think she's laughing at Elliot. She does that a lot.

Eadswith and Deue (you may recall Deue from the fireflies picture). Eadswith tends to drag Deue off into nature a lot. Chibis!

When in doubt, draw Mirai. She has a key this time! Dunno where that came from. I drew her a few months ago at Starbucks and she looked nothing like herself, so I had to convince myself I could still draw her. I like this one.

My first attempt at a magical girl = FAIL.
caitirin said she looks more like a Pokemon trainer, which is totally true. So that's what she is now. This is what happens when I draw and don't have plan. My characters end up with fish on a string.
Caitirin: Hey! She is NOT fail! *scolds Elaby roundly*
Elaby: ... *looks cowed* ... *GLOMPS*

Okay, getting closer to magical girl. Her skirt is way too stiff, though. I want to get better at drawing clothes and designing costumes, and this was an experiment.

Plz to be ignoring worst pose ever. She is obviously balancing on an invisible rock. I do like her clothes, though! And her hair. This one was entirely a clothes experiment; I didn't even intend to give her much detail in her face and hair. She ended up looking like some kind of shepherdess.
Fan art time!

Miiiiidna. Best video game sidekick ever. I love Midna and her hips and her prehensile hair. She also has a badass headdress that is very hard to draw O_o;; But I persevered!

This is Ezra Jennings, from The Moonstone. I adore him. Here's part of his description from the book (Franklin describes how gaunt and haggard he is before this):
From this strange face, eyes, stranger still, of the softest brown—eyes dreamy and mournful, and deeply sunk in their orbits—looked out at you, and (in my case, at least) took your attention captive at their will. Add to this a quantity of thick closely-curling hair, which, by some freak of Nature, had lost its colour in the most startlingly partial and capricious manner. Over the top of his head it was still of the deep black which was its natural colour. Round the sides of his head—without the slightest gradation of grey to break the force of the extraordinary contrast—it had turned completely white. The line between the two colours preserved no sort of regularity. At one place, the white hair ran up into the black; at another, the black hair ran down into the white. I looked at the man with a curiosity which, I am ashamed to say, I found it quite impossible to control.
Their relationship continues like this - Franklin being utterly captivated by Ezra Jennings and Ezra being... I believe the phrase is "morbidly anxious to keep from making himself an object of interest". Too late, Ezra. They deserve to be in their own yaoi manga. Ezra Jennings is bi-racial, feminized, ostracized, and utterly saves the world. I <3 this book. Someday I'll post all the quotes that make me ship Franklin and Ezra, but I'll spare you that for the time being XD

Date: 2010-04-17 05:00 am (UTC)I do think Lucy and Rosanna Spearman had something going, though. Witness:I hated that Rosanna's motive for everything turned out to be she fell in love with Franklin Blake at first sight!!!. I was just like, "Really, Wilkie Collins? Really?"

Date: 2010-04-17 07:29 pm (UTC)I really like the snow-maiden's eyes ... whoa, how expressive! She looks very sad.
The heart picture sort of scares me in a good way. ;} I love the expression on her face. It's very different than what you usually do.
I like the mermaid's ears and her tail.
Your character drawings are always so unique and expressive. It's like I can tell what they're thinking just by looking at them.
I don't necessarily think that's a Magical Girl FAIL ... she definitely looks like a magical girl BEFORE she transforms. You've got the type totally right.
I will definitely have to re-read The Moonstone with my slash glasses on. *giggles*

Date: 2010-04-17 10:49 pm (UTC)Thank you, Mama! You're so wonderful to me!
She looks very sad.
I know, and I'm not really sure why she's sad. It just ended up wanting to go in that direction.
The heart picture sort of scares me in a good way. ;} I love the expression on her face. It's very different than what you usually do.
\o/ Scaring you in a good way is victory! XD I also really enjoyed drawing her in a different style. Her hands were HAAARD.
It's like I can tell what they're thinking just by looking at them.
n_______n That is SO what I strive for. Thank you!
That's it! It's before she transforms! The fish on a string is her henshin item thing XD
You totally need to read The Moonstone again :3 Then we can squee about it! It's so slashy, and there's girl-slash as well. And it manages to not fail as hard as other Victorian novels in its treatment of Indians (although that's not to say it doesn't fail in some respects).

Date: 2010-04-17 10:51 pm (UTC)Oh my gosh, she does! XD I totally didn't think of that, but you're spot-on!
Hee, watercolors :3 I didn't catch onto the joke either XD
Midna is from Twilight Princess, a Legend of Zelda video game, and she can grab onto things with her hair. It's very useful! And she IS creepy a lot of the time XD But so cute, too! Hee, mignonne n_n
Thank you very much! :D
