I just got home from
caitirin's house, from watching movies with her and
kikai7 and trying to fix something in one of my computer files, and I
don't have time to actually get online to play with people but I could
not possibly not post this.
Driving home was breathtaking.
I don't know if it's a full moon tonight or tomorrow night, but the sky
tonight is so clear that if someone on Jupiter waved I'm sure I could
see it. Usually when I'm driving home, the moon is about at the level
of the treetops on route 4 so I get glimpses of it, flashes of shadow
and moonlight over my dashboard. For some reason moonlight has always
fascinated me to the point of mesmerism - maybe it's because, somehow,
I never noticed it when I was little. It wasn't until I was older that
I noticed that the light from the moon actually cast shadows onto the
floor in my living room. At any rate, the sight of that blue-silver
light washing over my dashboard always thrills me, and tonight...
tonight, the moon was so high that it was never obscured by trees. For
the entire drive, excepting of course those suddenly cursed places
where there are street lamps, my whole dashboard and my hands on the
wheel were bathed in moonlight.
I know that doesn't sound very singular... but it was. I don't know why. I swear I could have driven without my headlights on. There's something so different about being
able to see things clearly in the moonlight from being able to see
things clearly in the sunlight, and even on those nights that the moon
is bright and the sky is clear, I've never been able to see my
surroundings as sharply as I did tonight.
The moonlight casts shadows. Again, it seems a little ludicrous that such a simple thing as that would put me into the state of awe I found myself in, but I can't
deny it, and it was a good state. There is a field on route 4, a ways
before the bridge and the merge onto the highway that leads to
town, where there are two or three lone trees and at the top of
the rise, a wagon. The trees cast shadows in the moonlight. I wanted so
badly to just stop the car and get out and run all the way up that
field so I could stand under the trees and watch the shadows of the
leaves move. Moonlight is white, and blue, and cold, it's not like
sunlight. I love it so much more.
The mild annoyance of having someone drive up right behind you was even worse tonight. Sure, I was going 45 in a 45 mph zone where people usually do 60, only because I wanted to look around at a place I never get to actually see at night,
so I can see why they were probably impatient with me. But I don't
care. I wanted to look, and dammit, I wasn't going to pass this up.
Once I got onto the highway they passed me, and once out of the lights
of the second bridge I could see moonlight on my dashboard again. The
malls were horrible, too many lights altogether and no spaces between
them for the moon to take over. That's how it was on the interstate,
too, coming over the highrise and down to my exit. Once I got off the
traffic circle things improved.
My mother had left the porch light on for me, which for once I really wasn't glad of. But when I got out of the car, I walked up the driveway to where I could see my
shadow, and even though I had my big cumbersome backpack on, I spread
out my arms so I could see the shadows the moon cast of my fingers.
I would say I wished every night was like this... except that if that
were true, it wouldn't be nearly as magical on the nights it is.
