More To Play the King squee

I finished To Play the King this afternoon (I swear I'll write up an actually intelligent post about both House of Cards and this series soon). OMFG.


Awww, Stamper T_T I knew it was going to happen, not only because I spoiled myself in the internets, but come on, once Urquhart knew he knew, he was doomed. But but - with the "I only wanted to serve him. To be close to him." And the indignant betrayal at Urquhart's browbeating, and the "I didn't show you this just to make you upset - but that was an added benefit -" XD Such a bad man, and I love him.

I'm beginning to wonder when Urquhart is going to start cracking up and have a dream where the ghosts of everybody he's killed parade in front of him and Ratcliff er... his wife? Who's he got left? has to pat him and tell him everything will be fine.

And I was SO RELIEVED that nothing horrific happened to David Mycroft. Resigning was probably better for him in the long run considering what happened to the poor King, even though it was rotten, of course, that he felt he needed to. I loved the King ;_; Forced to abdicate because you speak out for justice and caring and equality! Urquhart is so eeeeeevil o_o

I have the third series on DVD, and I know nothing about what happens in that one, so woohoo!

Ahh, you finished it! Poor Stamper, he was actually quite in love with Urquhart and he gets kicked aside because he's not a skinny blonde. What gets me is if Urquhart hadn't been such an arse to him then he wouldn't have done anything with the tape and he would have lived.

I always chuckle at:

Urquhart: If any of this dirt sticks to Stamper I'll drop him like a hot brick.

Sarah: I thought he was your oldest friend.

Urquhart: He is.

Nice man!

And yes, I love how much Tim hates Sarah. I love the fact that he gets a kick out of making her cry. He's such a git. I love him more with every viewing!

Well yes, and partly because he broke the with the constitution. Urquhart has become an uncontrollable monster by this point but going into battle with the King makes him more popular. The King has that job until he dies and he is much younger than Urquhart. He should have waited it out.

I feel sorry for the King because he's a good man but I don't think the Monarchy should get involved in party politics. This King was totally a satire of Prince Charles, it cracks me up.

I actually don't like The Final Cut for various reasons which I won't go into now.

I'm also the only person who chuckles when Stamper pulls up outside Scotland Yard...because I'm a dork!

I know, seriously! And Urquhart said as much, too - that he shouldn't have treated him so contemptuously because that's the only reason he was driven to use the tape, not because of any real ambition. I loved the look on Stamper's face when Sarah said she was in love with Urquhart, and he's all "You have no idea what love really is," or something to that effect. *needs to watch it again*

Ah, yes! And that, obviously, wasn't supposed to garner sympathy, right? Was the way he was acting otherwise, apart from the political meddling, supposed to be sympathetic? I feel like an idiot that I know so little about how the British government is run -_-;;

I only realized that when they showed his divorced wife, because I have no clue what Prince Charles is like and I didn't connect the two so I assumed, when he took the throne, that it was departing completely from the real historical timeline. It finally hit me, though!

Oh I definitely think you're meant to feel sorry for him. He meant no harm by what he was doing and he is obviously a good man. It depends on how you feel about Monarchy I suppose. Some people feel they should be got rid of all together.

Also I do firmly believe that by this point the audience is placed completely alongside Urquhart. I mean, he talks to us and tells us what he's gonna do and asks questions. We're in on it, whether we like it or not.

Don't worry about it, I know practically nothing about the American Government. They're both run so differently!

Yes! And this is why it's so interesting. I love especially how occasionally he'll talk to the audience like he KNOWS we're appalled by him. But then he's all "You know you like it" and the audience goes o_o;;

-Ian Richardson plays a great character in this series. I remember this series and keep thinking how "Absolute Power corrupts absolutely."

-Another series with Ian Richardson playing a spy (not the main character) is "Tinker, Tailor, Solder, Spy". I highly recommend that one.
