I'm still working on that drabble/drawble meme, I swear! Here's my fic for [livejournal.com profile] coastal_spirit :D She requested any combination of Kenshin, Sano, and Saitou. I give you all of them! And their variously complicated relationships with each other.

I hope you like it, Mama! I had such fun writing it XD

Title: Reckless
Fandom: Rurouni Kenshin
Characters: Sanosuke, Saitou, Kenshin (and a small Yumi cameo)
Warnings: Language.
Words: 750
Notes: This has got two halves - the first one takes place after Sano fights Anji in Shishio's mansion in the Kyoto arc, and the second takes place during the first fight with Enishi in the Jinchu arc. Ahou means approximately "moron" in the Kansai dialect of Japanese. It's Saitou's pet name favorite insult for Sano.

The place was made of flamelight and shadow, and somewhere beyond, the subtle smell of coal fires. In the paneled hallway of Shishio's mansion, Kenshin and Saitou heard a shuffling but determined gait approach behind them. Kenshin recognized it and none of his defensive senses were triggered, but Saitou turned with his hand moving toward his sword. When he saw that it was Sanosuke he gave a snort.

"Thought you would join us after all, did you?"

Kenshin shot him a look, then turned back to survey Sano. "Are you all right?"

"Fine, fine," Sano said, and caught Kenshin's wrist as he lifted his hand to examine Sano's wounds. "Nothing to worry about. We've got bigger things, right?" Kenshin's skepticism was clear in his steady gaze, but he refrained from objecting, and Sano let go of his wrist.

"Indeed you do," Yumi said sharply, from ahead of them. Sano had forgotten she was there; he grimaced, and she scowled back at him. "The man in the next room is Uonuma Usui. He is known as the Blind Sword. You would do well to prepare yourselves."

"What else can you tell us about him?" Kenshin asked, moving back toward her. Sano went to join him, but as he did, Saitou put out his arm and in one motion pinned Sano by his shoulder to the wall.

"Ow!" Sano said with supreme indignation, and Kenshin glanced over his shoulder at the two of them. His attention was divided, however, and he judged the situation sufficiently free of danger to return his focus to Yumi's description of their next adversary.

"Look," Saitou said, his voice low, while Sano looked at him as if unsure whether he were still in possession of all his marbles. "I always knew you were an idiot, but I never thought you were this much of an idiot. Just how nearly dead are you?"

"I'm fine," Sano said, bristling. "I could take you now, as a matter of fact." Saitou snorted again, more loudly this time.

"You're not fooling anybody, ahou. I never considered you to be someone with a very substantial supply of good judgement, but this goes beyond my expectations. Do you realize what you almost did back there?"

Sano blinked at him. He had thought he'd done a pretty good job "back there," actually; he beat Anji without killing him and even managed to turn the fallen monk around. He knew - well, he hoped quite desperately, anyway - that Kenshin would be proud, but he was pretty sure Saitou at least shouldn't be angry at him for it.

Saitou gritted his teeth with a frustration he didn't bother to conceal. "You may be stupid enough not to see how closely your safety is tied to his stability, but I need his psyche in tact - such as it is - in order to accomplish my goal. Do you realize what it would have done to him to see you die in front of his eyes? He'd be useless. Consider the consequences to those around you before recklessly throwing your life away."

Sano tried to wriggle out of Saitou's hold. As if his unyielding grip weren't bad enough, the man was barely six inches away, and it made Sano's skin prickle in a most disturbing fashion. "It wasn't reckless," he said, somewhat sulkily. "It worked, didn't it?"

"This time," Saitou said, and stalked away.

--

"Shouldn't get so attached, my ass," Sano muttered as the two of them stood, ages later, keeping back from the melee with Enishi's men. His hand hurt, and he was pissed off. Really, really pissed off. So pissed off that he wanted to do something stupid and rash - the way Saitou implied he always acted - and precisely because of that, he didn't.

"Did you say something, ahou?"

"I said," Sano retorted, with what he felt was impressive restraint, "you should've taken your own damn advice."

"And what advice is that?"

"That dying recklessly might screw things up for somebody else."

Saitou raised both eyebrows. He actually looked surprised - genuinely surprised, Sano observed - but Sano was too busy inwardly swearing up a storm at his reddening ears that he didn't get to enjoy the feeling much. After a long silence, there came the quick scrape of a match as Saitou lit a cigarette.

"Pussy."

Sano spluttered, and punched Saitou hard in the arm with his good hand, but for the first time in their acquaintance he heard Saitou laugh in a way that wasn't entirely malicious.

I swear, you write the complex relationships between these three better than anyone I know. This is so, so perfect!

Ahou means approximately "moron" in the Kansai dialect of Japanese. It's Saitou's pet name favorite insult for Sano.

Indeed! It really is, isn't it? *giggly*

The place was made of flamelight and shadow, and somewhere beyond, the subtle smell of coal fires. In the paneled hallway of Shishio's mansion, Kenshin and Saitou heard a shuffling but determined gait approach behind them.

Once again, your beautiful use of the language and descriptive skills totally pulled me into the story. I remember this place so clearly, and your description makes me experience it over again. I love that Kenshin knew it was Sano, but that Saitou did not.

Kenshin is such a mother hen - only in Sano's case, he's a like a mother hen who is trying very hard to give his adult chick some dignity and independence, but still worrying. Oh, I love it. I can just see the type of look he shot Saitou. *laughs*

Eeeee! Wall-pinning! This is perfect, with Saitou being all domineering, Sano being indignant, and Kenshin being like *sigh - I don't need to be dealing with their shenanigans when, dammit, my attention needs to be focused elsewhere!*

Just how nearly dead are you?"

"I'm fine," Sano said, bristling. "I could take you now, as a matter of fact."

AHAHAHAHA! Perfect. Perfect.

He knew - well, he hoped quite desperately, anyway - that Kenshin would be proud, but he was pretty sure Saitou at least shouldn't be angry at him for it.

Awwwwww! Sanosuke is so cute.

Wow. WOW. I love how you've captured the thing here that most defines Saitou in my mind - that what he says always has that duality to it: he words things so that, on the surface, he appears to be only concerned with what benefits him and his "goals", but that, in reality, it's very evident that he cares about the welfare of both Kenshin and Sano. It's evident that "those around you" does not only apply to Kenshin here.

As if his unyielding grip weren't bad enough, the man was barely six inches away, and it made Sano's skin prickle in a most disturbing fashion.

Rowr, rowr. *swoons* I bet it did. *giggles*

I'm too talkative. LJ won't let me post all my comments in one post, so I'll have to comment on the second half of this story in another post. >_<

Bweeeee! *blushes* I love writing them, so this makes me very happy.

I love that Kenshin knew it was Sano, but that Saitou did not.

And I bet it pissed Saitou off to no end XD I wrote the first line last, weirdly enough, so I'm glad you liked it :3

only in Sano's case, he's a like a mother hen who is trying very hard to give his adult chick some dignity and independence, but still worrying.

This is SO apt. I love it. Kenshin really is just like this. He trusts Sano, even though few other people do, but he still can't help being protective.

Hee! Shenanigans XD Kenshin is like *eye roll* at Sano and Saitou.

I love how you've captured the thing here that most defines Saitou in my mind - that what he says always has that duality to it

*does a dance* I'm so happy! That's my favorite thing about Saitou.

It's evident that "those around you" does not only apply to Kenshin here.

Bwahahahaha XD He only thinks he's not easy to see through.

I'm so happy you liked this! *bweeeeee*

Comments, part 2:

So pissed off that he wanted to do something stupid and rash - the way Saitou implied he always acted - and precisely because of that, he didn't.

Yes! YES! Because Sano really has grown up a lot by this point.

"That dying recklessly might screw things up for somebody else."

I love how you have Sano turning Saitou's own words on him here.

Saitou raised both eyebrows. He actually looked surprised - genuinely surprised, Sano observed

I bet he was surprised!I love it!

- but Sano was too busy inwardly swearing up a storm at his reddening ears that he didn't get to enjoy the feeling much.

Awwwww! Yes!

After a long silence, there came the quick scrape of a match as Saitou lit a cigarette.

"Pussy."

This is absolutely perfect Saitou. OMG, just exactly the way he would respond. I like the long pause, as if this took him somewhat aback and he's recovering before deciding exactly how to respond to what Sano said.

Sano spluttered, and punched Saitou hard in the arm with his good hand, but for the first time in their acquaintance he heard Saitou laugh in a way that wasn't entirely malicious.

Oh, squee, squee, squee!!! This is a wonderful ending. I can hear the way he laughed!

I love this! Thank you so much, sweetie!
