The Six Napoleons on The Slasher's Annotated Sherlock Holmes

I finally (finally - I'm so slow!) finished my annotations of "The Six Napoleons" for janeturenne's fabulous The Slasher's Annotated Sherlock Holmes. This was just about the most fun thing I've ever done. I know why I did my MA in literature XD No doubts at all. This is what I thrive on.

As always, with me, my interpretations can be seen as slashy or not. SIXN is such a significant story in regards to the sometimes-uncertain friendship between Holmes and Lestrade that I focus mostly on that in my annotations, but as always, there are several bits that discuss Watson and Holmes. I also made liberal use of the OED in figuring out some archaic terms. Whee!

And I have had such a busy, wonderful weekend that it's definitely time to collapse into bed! I can't believe it's Sunday night already!

Elaby, darling, I adore you beyond the power of words to express. In fact, I already adored you beyond the power of words to express, but this has quite definitively pushed you into the category of "people with claims to my life-long devotion". Thank you thank you THANK YOU ever so much for these; I've just started looking, and so far I'm utterly bowled over. The rest of the night is for reading and squeeing and adding cross-references and probably stopping back here every half-hour or so and leaving comments when I get to a point of particular brilliance and/or feel like it's been too long since last I stopped to shower you with praises XD

Thank you so much for... well, for all of the above. And your art was very well-deserving of linking-- that drawing makes me squee just thinking about it :) I've been meaning to have a link-fest, going through my favorite pieces of fanart and fic and inserting comments to plug them. Until now, only a few are up there. There's one to your Baker Street, 3:25 AM (along with two others) on the word nightmare in BLAN, and one to Jem's Bird's French Lessons on "Vernet," and one to Elina's Little Sherlock drawings somewhere at the beginning of GREE...and a handful more. Oh, and I put a pair up in SIXN late last night on "the loaded hunting-crop" to Daylyn's pair of fics on the subject XD Making a concerted effort at linkage needs to be my next "for periods of writer's block" project. *goes off to create an annotation on the words 'Molesey Mystery'...*

Your note on "respectable and unromantic" makes me turn cartwheels! I would never have picked up on the profound slashy implications of such a teeny bit of phrasing...
And I didn't remember that Holmes walks in while Watson is dressing! I do adore SIXN so, even more than usual with your notes :)

Bwee! Thank you XD I'd just been reading about how "respectable" = "all that is right in the world" in Victorian parlance, and so it really amused and interested me that Watson, who is so often accused of being a romantic, would pair "respectable" with the opposite of what he is. Or what he likes.

What can I say? There was squeeing. Lots of it. The neighbours will be giving me odd looks from now on.

I loved the bit about Watson considering respectability unromantic. If Watson considers non-conformity romantic then Holmes must be the most romantic thing in the world to him...yes...that makes me happy...*sigh*

And Lestrade! What more can I say about Lestrade? You highlighted very well the fact that Lestrade's ego seems to have taken the back seat in this story, occasionaly peeking out just to confirm that this is Lestrade and not an imposter.

This story is why I'm a (not so) secret H/L shipper.

I was doing most of this as I was writing that Molesey Mystery fic with Lestrade, and I just love him so much XD And I LOVE that he can bring Holmes to that state.
