I need a new LJ client. The one I have doesn't let you get to your history O.o

Anyway, that wasn't my question. I believe that the little heart character (which I can't find ANYwhere how to reproduce) that people often use in LJ posts ([livejournal.com profile] starandrea in particular lately) shows up in my browser as a line like | only bold.

Does anyone know how I can remedy this? Is it a Firefox thing? A Mac thing? I can see them on my PC with Firefox, but that may be a different version or something (certainly it's the Windows version, but maybe a different edition).

Weirdness. I miss those little hearts!

[edit: Thanks to the commenters, I've figured out now to find the character palette, so now I can use ♥ if I want. Still not sure how to see the ones other people use, but this is certainly a start :)This is also how I'd find accented letters like é, which is good to know.]

[edit part 2: Well, I can see the heart if I'm editing the post, but not when it's actually showing up on my f'list. Huh.]

Woah. The ♥ is showing up as a | ?

The only thing I can think of at the moment is that the character set being used by the browser (or the OS) doesn't include the heart character. (And it probably doesn't include the other three suits characters).

Hah, it is indeed! On my screen, you just said "The | is showing up as a | ?"

Dang. That's a bummer.

Start -> Programs -> Accessories -> System Tools -> Character Map. You can then copy and paste your little hearts, or any other character that takes your fancy. I keep my character map on the desktop because it's so useful. :-)

She bes onna Mac, now; not a Windows based system.

Also, though, she noted that hearts characters used by others are not showing up on her Mac as ♥s. I suspect the Mac character set is the culprit. Mac folks will have to chime in with how to rectify that one, as I haven't a clue about how to fix it on a Mac.

Eeep. Of course - should have noticed that. :-(

I bet you're right. Now that I know it's called a "character set" though, I can probably search the help to see if there's anything there. Thanks :)

Hm, now let's see if I can follow the same path on a Mac... I'm sure it can be done!

It's definitely something with Firefox on the Mac, because they show up fine in Safari, but not Firefox.

*investigates*

Weirdness! I can't figure it out.

I did just figure out that when I'm writing a comment, I can check spelling by holding down the control key while clicking the mouse.

Now THAT'S cool! For some reason, my Firefox is already set for spell-check in comments and things. In anything I type in an internet window, actually.

Ah. I tend to use Safari for any fun stuff and Firefox for work stuff.

Aaah, okay. That makes sense. I've set Safari on Rosetta Mode because I can't play with Gaia stuff without it, but Rosetta Mode seems to slow down Firefox quite a bit. So I use Safari for Gaia but not much else.

The only time I really have problems with Safari is when I go to fanfiction.net.

When I want to put in a heart I type "♥" and it puts a heart in...

dammit. I thought the quotes would make what I type not be a heart...
I type & hearts ; without the spaces

Oooh, thanks for the code thing, though! I think it must just be something with my Firefox. Though I changed the font settings and I couldn't see the heart still... I'll play with them some more and see.

Yeah, I see that as a bold | line. I think it's something wacky with my Firefox, though, because in Safari, I can see them just fine.
