Good god, this shiny new MacBook is REALLY SHINY. I downloaded Firefox and Yahoo Messenger and I'm looking at the GIMP page. I'm typing this from my new LJ clienty thingamajig. All I have to do now is get all the stuff I want over onto this computer :) I fear I'll never use my desktop again, but I imagine I will.

But not for schoolwork! *cue maniacal laughter*

At least not for a while. Anyway, I'm very excited about this laptop. I've got to play around with Pages (the word processor) more to see how it works, and go poking around Keynote to discern just what that program does. I think it's a PowerPoint-like presentation-designing program.

So far, the only problem I'm running into is that I can't get AirPort to connect to our wireless :\ Hopefully that's the wireless's problem and not the computer's, but since our wireless has ALWAYS been finicky, I figure that's probably it.

*goes to explore some more*

Yay! Another Mac user *hug*

Keynote is nice, It is what Powerpoint should be.

I'd recommend that you maybe keep an eye on http://www.macfixit.com/ before you install any updates on the Mac. Some in the past have been a bit buggy - I usually look at that site and see what luck others are having before I let the computer install updates.

Enjoy your new computer!

Ooh, thank you for the advice! The computer will ask me before installing updates, right? Or will I have to change the settings so it'll do that?

I'm glad to be another Mac user ^_^

It will probably pop up a windows saying there are a bunch of updates to install. I'm pretty sure they didn't change things in the latest version of OSX so that it will install updates by default. It should still ask you.

I recall that I've never had luck connecting to your wifi network. Have you had Bethany or anyone else (other than RC, of course) with a PC laptop successfully connect to your network? I'm wondering if it is an alien computer vs. your network issue or a Mac vs. network issue.

Bethany connected successfully. I think it might be a Mac thing, if that's the case. I hope not, though O.o Our wireless has always been a little unreliable. We'll get it sorted out one way or another, if we have to call up the support people.

What brand wireless router are you using?

Ok. Linksys wireless routers have had a history of problems working with Mac systems over Airport. Apple fixed that somewhat with one of their updates this summer for the Intel line and that update should be included in whatever set of updates it has you do when you finally get connected to the internet. I encountered news on this this past summer when helping a friend with his new laptop and trying to get it to stay connected at Soul.

Oh, cool! Thank you very much. It hasn't had me do any updates yet despite the fact that I'm connected to the internet, but I can check for them (somehow, I'm sure ^^;;)

So the update is only for the Intel line?

I'm not positive, that was my impression though... When Shae updated his computer was while I was in the temporary apartment. I can't remember if that was before or after you moved this summer and when you last tried to access the internet from Soul or from [livejournal.com profile] caitirin's and [livejournal.com profile] elaby's, so maybe it has fixed yours?

I think the problem may have been that we need to download updates for the router, which is a D-Link (not a Linksys as we had thought).

Ahhh, there might be something different going on there. I would make sure to download any updates from Apple first, anyways, as that still stands a good chance of helping correct your connection difficulties. I haven't heard of any D-Link problems with the Mac, but I might recommend googling D-Link w/ "macbook" or "airport" to see if you can pull up any product reviews or error reports.

I did updates this morning, but the only thing that they offered was an X11 update. The guy at the computer store said he had the same problem with his D-Link, but he was running a Dell, not a Mac, so googling would be a good idea.

hmmmm...I'll have to test it out.

We figured it out! For some reason, our password is hex-based and so you have to specify that in the password type dropdown menu, which wasn't the default. It was as simple as that ^^;;

I've connected to other home wifi networks so I would suggest beating on your support people or bugging Adrith.

Hee, okay :) Thanks! Rich also said that he's known people to have trouble with our brand of router, and that Apple put out an update to fix it that I ought to get when I do my next update.
