Font trivia
Jan. 2nd, 2007 10:50 amFascinating trivia tidbit of the day:
I just learned why sans serif is called "sans serif." You know those little strokes at the ends of the sticks that make up (Roman) type? The ones you can see at the bottom of "l" if you're typing in the LJ update window? The things that make the difference between lowercase l and uppercase I in fonts where they don't look identical*? Those strokes are called "serifs," and sans serif - you guessed it - doesn't have 'em.
My particular journal style doesn't have them either, so I don't know how well this post will make sense to people. In other news, the big library is deserted like whoa today, and I got my laptop! I will go home and play with it this afternoon; this morning is for research.
*oh, the irony!

Date: 2007-01-02 05:45 pm (UTC)On paper serif fonts are easier to read than san-serif but on computer screens san-serif are easier to read!
Also, some san-serif fonts were actually designed specifically for computer use so they are even easier on the eyes. (Verdana is the main one I can think of off the top of my head)
This is why I thought I was going to have an anuerism when I saw our software upgrade here at work for the first time and they were using 10 PT TIMES NEW ROMAN!!!! Luckily it is possible for us to change the font being used because it was literally taking me at least 3 times as long to go through the screens before I changed to a nice sane Verdana font!
