LotRO character bios
Jul. 31st, 2013 07:35 pmThis last month and a half has been one constant stream of activity. Vacationing with Rachel's parents, helping Rachel's mother move her grandmother into a retirement community, weddings, parties, and - of course - work every day of the week. I feel like I've been in "on" mode since the summer solstice, and for me, "on" mode is very tiring. The only time I was able to turn myself in to "off" mode was one weekend where I was so sick I couldn't go anywhere :\
We've had very little time for creative things or for relaxing, but in the midst of it all I've been working on a "comfort writing" project - old-school character bios for my Lord of the Rings Online characters. Researching obscure details about the geography of Middle-earth and making references that only a handful of people are likely to be interested in? Count me in!
Name: Athelthryth (named after his grandaunt, a shield-maiden, thank you very much)
Race: Man (Rohirrim)
Gender/sex: Male/male
Region of origin: Westfold, Rohan
Personality: Athelthryth is helpful, idealistic, and naïve. He tends to take things very much to heart and gets easily wrapped up in the plights of others. If someone inspires loyalty in him, they've got his lifelong support. His moral convictions of right and wrong are rock-solid and he doesn't spend very much time examining them (so it's pretty convenient that he lives in the universe he does).
History: Athelthryth was born in a village in the Westfold of Rohan. Being fairly skilled with a sword but not altogether fabulous with horses (oh the shame!), he considered himself in need of worldly experience before he could offer his services to the Rohirric army. He set out on the Great West Road through the Gap of Rohan and traveled north on the Greenway until he reached Breeland and became entangled in the resistance against Angmar. His younger sister, Eoswithe, followed in his path some time afterwards and tends to show him up a bit in the realms of leadership and accomplishments (not to mention horsemanship).
Interests: Exploring; learning about the Dunedain; armor-crafting.
Fears: Barrow wights. Regular corpses are bad enough, but walking ones make him whimper.
Likes: Faethuil; Archet; Aragorn; sleeping by a campfire under the stars; Rivendell; wide-open plains; getting drunk in Frogmorton.
Dislikes: When Faethuil rummages through the pockets of that cadaver under the tree over there; Angmar; getting drunk in Moria.
Favorite weapon/attack: Athelthryth prefers two-handed swords and area-of-effect attacks. He currently wields a two-handed sword named Ealdgestreon ("ancient treasure").
Friends: Athelthryth would be everyone's friend if you let him. Faethuil is his partner, lover, and companion. He's proud to be friends with Aldrad.
Name: Therengir
Race: Man (Gondorian)
Gender/sex: Male/male
Region of origin: Gondor
Personality: Therengir is unexcitable and steady. He's introspective and therefore more prone to melancholy than some, but he takes it all in stride and keeps an even keel. As a descendent of the Men of Numenor, he feels a deep connection with his ancestry and the history of Eriador. He has a calming influence on others. Because he's given thought to the far-reaching repercussions of the threat of Angmar and the shadow in Mordor, and of the free people's fight against them, he takes his part very seriously and weighs his decisions carefully.
History: Therengir grew up in Minas Tirith and was educated at the great libraries there. Being a younger son from a well-off family, he was given a thorough education but no ready-made position. He left the city to study the history of Middle-earth after a falling out with his parents.
Interests: History, particularly that of Men in Middle-earth; music. He is not given to singing, but he plays numerous instruments skillfully.
Fears: People who manipulate the ignorant.
Likes: Books; Evendim; genealogy; visiting ruins; playing music in a quiet inn.
Dislikes: Rowdy hobbit parties.
Favorite weapon/attack: As a Minstrel, Therengir uses light magic. He prefers string instruments. Call of Orome is a favorite spell. He is less thrilled about close combat, but he uses a sword well enough.
Friends: Therengir travels alone for the most part, but he's been known to enjoy the company of Eoswithe, Perren, and Kovat (with whom he works particularly well).
Name: Kriemhalin
Race: Dwarf (Durin's folk)
Gender/sex: Kriemhalin is a female-bodied dwarf. This leads me to interesting questions about dwarf concepts of gender (as opposed to sex), since according to Tolkien, female dwarves very rarely leave their homes and, at any rate, are outwardly identical to male dwarves. Is there a concept of the female gender that would be equivalent to that in human societies, or even understandable by us? In any event, Kriemhalin prefers the pronoun "she".
Region of origin: Originally Erebor (the Lonely Mountain); later, Ered Luin.
Personality: Kriemhalin thinks of herself as just a simple miner who's stepped in a little bit over her head. All she really wants is to make sure her home is safe, but as doing so gets more complicated, she finds herself led farther and farther away from it. As much as she loved her uncomplicated life as a miner, she derives great joy from battle. She takes no crap, and if you trying handing her any, she's more likely to hit you with a club than argue. It's faster.
History: Kriemhalin spent her childhood in Erebor and journeyed with her family to Thorin's Hall in Ered Luin as an adolescent. She was trained to mine and refine ore from a young age. Her parents are laborers and she has a large, tightly knit family. She found herself a part of the effort against Angmar quite by accident, and has been surprised at how fulfilling it's turned out to be, in spite of her somewhat flippant attitude.
Interests: Refining metals; machinery; maps; stonemasonry.
Fears: Any given threat is more likely to make Kriemhalin angry than afraid. I'm sure she'll reconsider this when she crosses paths with a Balrog or something.
Likes: Killing goblins; snow; double entendres.
Dislikes: Goblins who are alive; smoky cities; mushy food.
Favorite weapon/attack: Kriemhalin likes clubs. She also favors shield attacks. She'd rather save finesse for extracting delicate veins of mithril from a mine wall.
Friends: Kriemhalin would probably get along pretty well with anyone, but she actually travels alone a lot.
Name: Russelia
Race: Woman (Breelandish). I'm using the LotRO terms for race; not sure whether Tolkien would have used this for a female human.
Gender/sex: Female/female
Region of origin: Bree
Personality: Russelia is an earnest and driven young woman. She's something of a perfectionist and has very deep roots in her homeland. She'd rather be tromping about the Chetwood or using dog-sized spiders for target practice in the Midgewater Marshes than go to a festival with the other girls her age. She has a burning desire to prove herself and will attempt all manner of unwise feats to do so.
History: Russelia's family lives on a farm in the Eastern Breefields. She trained as a Hunter from a young age, excelling particularly in tracking and woodsmanship. When the chance came up for her to aid in the fight against local brigands, she jumps at it. Unbeknownst to her, this would start her on a path to travel far from her beloved Bree - but I get the feeling she won't mind.
Interests: Surviving in the wild; archery; showing up her peers. She's always admired her mother's weaving skill but she doesn't have the patience for fine work or the attention span for plain weaving.
Fears: Not much yet. Trolls threw her for a loop, but the only time she's seen any, she had a level 58 Elf with her to drop them in one hit.
Likes: Hard-won victory; impressing Faethuil; horses; thunderstorms.
Dislikes: Having to sit still; enclosed spaces; barghests.
Favorite weapon/attack: She's skilled with a longbow and shuns crossbows with undeserved snobbery.
Friends: She admires Faethuil a great deal, and wants to repay his generosity for taking her under his wing by being the awesomest there ever was.
Name: Tirfalas ("watches the shore" in Sindarin)
Race: Elf (Sindarin)
Gender/sex: Male/male
Region of origin: Mithlond, Lindon (the Gray Havens)
Personality: Tirfalas is fairly young as Elves go, and he's extremely interested in the cultures of other Middle-earth races (to the point of eyebrow-raising among his people). He resides solidly in the "help make this land better before my inevitable moving on" camp rather than the "move on and get it over with, this place is bollocks" camp.
History: Tirfalas became interested in Mannish and Dwarven culture when studying in Mithlond. He travelled to Celondim and Duillond to familiarize himself with the area, and being so close to the Shire, learned of the existence of Hobbits. He was caught up in the free people's struggle against Angmar at that time.
Interests: Other cultures, particularly their architecture and food; cooking and baking; archery.
Fears: Hard to say. He's only level 13 :\ I'm sure he'll run into something eventually.
Likes: Birds; springtime; going to cultural festivals; baking muffins.
Dislikes: Being sent on pointless errands; pessimism.
Favorite weapon/attack: Tirfalas uses a bow and prefers short-range shots. He doesn't shy away from hand-to-hand combat.
Friends: He'd be eager to make some.
Name: Monaloria
Race: Hobbit (Stoor)
Gender/sex: Female/female
Region of origin: A village between Willowbottom and Deephallow in the Eastfarthing of the Shire.
Personality: Monaloria has little patience with stick-in-the-muds and has been in constant trouble her entire young life for flaunting social conventions. That said, she's excited by pretty much everything and can be coerced to help out with any task given the smallest encouragement. Being prone to backtalk and sarcasm, she sometimes frustrates people, but she's always so willing and cheerful that they can't stay mad.
History: Without enough money or family status to be called "eccentric," Monaloria is merely a nuisance, and her parents gave up any hope of making her into a model citizen ages ago. As a "tween" she started learning to trap rabbits and makes a small living doing that, but she still resides with her parents. Events led her to join the Bounders, and she finds that now she's always kept interested and makes a tidy sum helping people out.
Interests: Beekeeping; practical jokes; keeping the borders of the Shire safe.
Fears: Bears.
Likes: Delivering mail; beef-and-potato pasties at the Bird and Baby; the ten minutes after a rainstorm; boating.
Dislikes: The huge marsh-flies that populate the Rushock Bog; assorted Sackville-Bagginses.
Favorite weapon/attack: Monaloria uses a longbow, but for the most part she's more interested in exploring and running errands than battle.
Friends: She's got a tsundere crush on Dandileen.

Monaloria dislikes: assorted Sackville-Bagginses. *giggles* I can imagine they'd not approve of her AT ALL.

HEE XD Well, you see, you can get drunk in LotRO. And in Frogmorton, in the Shire, it's nice and safe to get drunk. The screen gets all fuzzy or tilty or otherwise addled, and you have a bit of trouble running around for a while, but it's fairly safe. But there's this item you can get, called the Moria Keg, and if you drink from it - no matter where you are - it transports you, stinking drunk, to SOMEWHERE in Moria XD (and without your pants, oh god.) Moria is, as you might expect, VAST AND DANGEROUS, and of course Athelthryth drank from the keg when he wasn't nearly high enough level to normally venture into Moria. He woke up one time high up on this weird rocky precipice thing, and one other time in the middle of a lake surrounded with terrifyingly high-level monsters XD Getting drunk in Moria is bad news!
I can imagine they'd not approve of her AT ALL.
Hahaha, you hit the nail on the head XD They are SO ANNOYING too... they send you on all kinds of stupid errands and they're so mean to you!
