Remember back when I bought a Hujoo Yomi plastic BJD so I could practice faceups?

Himawari thinks your soul looks yummy.

Well, it turns out that you kind of have to have nice weather (45+ degrees and dry) to work on faceups, because the sealant you use as a base and to seal the color has to be sprayed outside and doesn't play well with temperatures near freezing. You know what that means for New Hampshire - once November hits, unless you get lucky on an unseasonably warm weekend, there won't be an opportunity to do faceups until spring. This weekend, though, temperatures rose and I had a few free hours, so I gave little Himawari some color!

This is what I look like when I go outside to spray a doll head with Testors Dull Coat. Sealants like this are very dangerous to breathe without respiratory protection. I do wonder what the neighbors think...

Here's Himawari's face with just a layer of sealant. It gives her giant plastic head a nice matte finish.

I used pastels (non-oil-based ones) to give her face color. By scraping them with a razor, you can get a little pile of pastel dust, and then you brush it gently on in layers (and layers and layers and layers) with a paintbrush. It takes a while, but over time, it builds up nicely.

After I got one layer on, I took her outside and sprayed her again. Once the sealant dried, I brushed on more pastel dust to make the color more vibrant. I actually think I should have left well enough alone at the last stage; she looks a little bit like she has a sunburn or got into the strawberries.

I used watercolor pencils to do her eyelashes and eyebrows, and brushed a little bit of the pastels under her eyes as well. On Rachel's advice, I think I'll use a less reddish pastel color next time. Last of all, I put some garden-variety acrylic gloss on her lips to make them shinyshiny.

Himawari stole one of London's wigs, and it looks pretty good on her. I also got her a couple of Barbie outfits that fit decently. They were surprisingly cute and tasteful.

There's a little too much red around her mouth, but I'm pleased with the way she came out for my first face-up. And MAN she has gorgeous eyes - I bought them from Junkyspot, where I got her, and they were called "Sunflower," which is why I ended up picking that name for her (himawari is Japanese for sunflower).
