elaby: (Gackt - Alone)

While looking up lyrics the other day I found out that www.jpopasia.com has convenient lists of music videos under individual artists. I watched a bunch of Fukuyama Masaharu videos (he's much more of a babe than I imagined! And a lot younger-looking!), and then I moved on to Gackt.

Hee. Gackt. If you ever want to watch music videos that combine gorgeous operatic-thrash piano/violins/guitar, an extremely pretty man, and OMG TEH MAJOR DRAMA, Gackt is a good bet. He loves his angst, Gackt does, and he piles it on by the truckload. All of his stuff is pretty high-quality, but I came across a couple of things that I'd never seen before.

The first is a live version of Orenji no Taiyou (Orange Sun), the song from Moon Child, Gackt's vampire movie with Hyde (the lead singer of L'arc~en~Ciel). The cool thing about this version is that the main cast of the movie, except for Hyde (he was on tour, I read), is on stage with Gackt. And Leehom Wang, who played Son in Moon Child, sings Hyde's part :D I actually like his voice better XD They don't do the epic orgasmic harmony near the end, though *headdesk* Gackt does it alone, which is an utter let-down. But it's adorable to see everybody together, and it's awesome to hear Leehom Wang sing. And besides, the song is one of my favorites in the history of anything.

I'm kind of surprised Gackt didn't bust a vocal cord at the end there...

Up next... OMFG SHIMA UTA. Shima Uta (Island Song) is a song written in 1992 by The Boom, inspired by the band's trip to Okinawa. It's very well known in Japan and is widely associated with Okinawa. My first Japanese teacher was Okinawan, and when a bunch of students from Japan came to our university to visit, she taught us Shima Uta and we sang it for them. She also gave us a CD with the song on it and a bunch of other Okinawan music, which I've since lost. I saw the link to this and thought "It couldn't possibly be..." AND IT SO IS. GACKT, SINGING SHIMA UTA. WITH A BUNCH OF TRADITIONAL SINGERS AND MUSICIANS. *ARMWAVING* *NOSTALGIA ATTACK*

1. I love this mam
2. Yeah, I kind of prefer the Jougen no Tsuki version of "Orenji no Taiyou" myself too.

4. Oh my God...! I had never heard this version of "Shima Uta" before! It's so beautiful... *Swoons*
4a. I'd only heard this version before, which, honestly, isn't that bad for a cover: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3ld2fAkDwuI

There are times when I forget just how good Gackt is. I mean, I always think, "Oh, pretty man with sexy voice!", but it isn't until I hear him again that I realize just how astonishingly talented and versatile he is.

Should I know Fukuyama Masaharu? He's definitely a babe ... and very talented as well.

I'll have to go read your article right now :D

I have a bunch of Fukuyama Masaharu songs that I ADORE :) There was one time I left my CD in the car and you used my car (back when I had the green car, omg!) and after you came back, you were like 'HOLY CRAP who was that on your CD?!" And it was him XD I don't know if you'd recognize any of his songs in particular. But I do loff him. I translated his song "Niji" for animelyrics.com :3 (the video for that one is quite strange).

Gackt is really amazing. As overly dramatic as he is, he never crosses the line into "so ridiculous I can't take you seriously" for me. That doesn't stop me from giggling at him half the time, but man, he's so talented.

Yes and no. Moreso yes. Jougen no Tsuki is the name of the tour that version is from.

That version of Shima Uta is made of squee.
