Obsession time!

caitirin is now thoroughly aware, I am very much obsessed with Vocaloid. It's just--! Miku, she's so CUTE, and the music is so GOOD, and there's so much OF IT *armwaving*
The deal, as far as I can figure out, is that people use the Vocaloid software to record songs with synthesized vocals and then they post them on Nico Nico Douga (the Japanese equivalent of YouTube) or YouTube, and either they or someone else creates incredible music videos, called PVs, to go with the songs. There are often several different PVs for each song. And for your enjoyment, I've embedded several under the cut!
These songs are largely pop-rockish, and sound a lot like anime opening themes, which is why I love them omg.
World is Mine
This is one of the first songs I came across, and it's still probably the one that I think sounds most like a human singer. Varying degrees of skill and personal choice make Miku sound different in many of her songs, and this voice will always be recognizably "Miku" to me. The video is also indicative of the kind of animation one usually sees in these: lots of still pictures used in creative ways to reduce the amount of actual animation the creators have to churn out. I tried to get versions with subtitles to post here, and this one has good ones :3
Rolling Girl
This is a much more serious video, dealing with mental illness, and it's absolutely gorgeous. The song is beautiful too, with a Dresden Dolls thrash-piano sort of feel. The camera-work - if you want to call it that - does an incredible job setting the mood. The whole thing is very visually interesting. And holy cow, just wait for the end.
Hello Planet
EEEEEEE XD The adorableness of this song reaches epic heights. It's styled like old-school video game music, and the music video is all made of little 8-bit sprites. It somehow manages to be SO FREAKING CUTE while at the same time being bleak and ultimately uplifting.
Hold, Release; Rakshasa and Carcasses
This is one of my very favorites songs and videos. It's deeply creepy in a Japanese-folklore sort of way, not a "killing little children" sort of way (there are plenty of Vocaloid songs and videos with that there, lemme tell you O_o) and the style is not very traditionally-anime-like. It works so well.
I Like You, I Love You
Have some cuteness to balance out the previous video! If anything could be cuter than Hello Planet, it's this one. This is Kagamine Rin, another Vocaloid, not Miku. I think the reason I love this song so much is because it's so colloquial and sounds so much like dialogue. And GOD, it could kill you with the cute.
Palette World Breakdown
This song isn't one of my favorites, but the animation in this video is so gorgeous - television series quality - that I had to include it. Zomg.
Melt
Melt is one of Miku's most famous songs, and I really love it. This PV is one I only just found today, and it's really really adorable. It also makes up for the lack of subtitles in that it pretty much depicts what's being said the whole time. D'aww. Cute little umbrella-sharing love.
Melt: Green version
This is also a Melt music video, but I included it because it's a slightly more rock-y version of the song and I like it a lot. Sadly, this one also has no English subtitles. The video is completely different: it uses one picture with massively awesome CG manipulation. As with Rolling Girl, just wait for the last stanza of the song.
If you're interested in seeing a version that has an English translation of Melt, try this one: Fandub of Melt. It's a fandub (obvi), but the singer is good, and the animation that goes with it is adorable. It's also the ONLY translation I could find that didn't take extreme liberty with the lyrics e_e
The Disappearance of Hatsune Miku
This is a really cool one. It's a plea from Miku not to delete her program ^^;; And it's chilling. But gorgeous. I had to watch it several times because the lyrics go so fast that I couldn't keep up with the subtitles.
Triple Baka
Silly hyperactive techno pop is in order after that last one! The animation in this one is really quick and interesting, and makes good use of repetition of frames. And the song is hilarious and adorable XD
