Yay! XD I know that you'll be interested in my HoC posts even if other people might not be :3
The tragic thing is that if Urquhart hadn't pushed him away in favour of Sarah in the early stages Stamper may have been content with whatever bit of attention Urquhart threw his way.
Seriously! I think he was really very surprised to be offered the position of party chairman. And then when the initial shock and fright wore off, he was so fiercely intense about doing well. He had some line like "We'll grind their asses into the ground" and it totally had this "please please like me I swear I won't let you down" undertone.
When he realises who it is, his shoulders sag and he just looks so hurt and disappointed.
Aww, yeah, and CJ is so incredibly good at that kind of thing, isn't he? The scene I mentioned in my post, where he looked terrified to be asked what he really wanted, totally reminded me Lestrade in a lot of your fics, (Break and The Accident in particular) being all horrified by the idea of Holmes finding out how he feels. Which, of course, made me squee even more.
After all to protect him he might have been tempted to destroy the tape, but he keeps it just in case.
Ooh, you're right... I never thought about it from that angle, but it makes perfect sense character-wise for Stamper to know that Urquhart dropping him one day would be a distinct possibility.
I remember once for a creative writing exercise I wrote two really short pieces on HoC and TPtK from Stampers POV. I wonder where that is.
