Pocketwatch!

I've wanted a pocketwatch for some time, but whenever I'd gone to price them, they were always more expensive than I could afford. But today there are rather nice sales going on, so I managed to find one for a reasonable price :3 And oh, what a one did I find.

First, let me show you my old watch. I don't like how wristwatches feel, so I've had the kind that clips onto your belt loop for years. My first one was built so that the watch face was upside down when you pick it up on your belt loop (brilliant) but that at least meant that I learned how to read a watch upside down. It eventually died, I believe partially due to a certain incident in which caitirin tempted me into leaping in the ocean with all my clothes on, and I got a new one with the watch right side up. It's given me many years of good service, but it's just about ticked its last tock, if you know what I mean.


Note the wire holding it together near the bottom, courtesy of amythestcat who kindly fixed it for me a few years ago when it wore down and kept coming apart. The ugly bald spot beneath the face is where a fake compass was when I bought it; eventually the plastic dome came off, and I had to snip off the pointy bit the needle balanced on. Last night the plastic disc finally came off.



And today, I got a shiny beautiful new pocketwatch :3 I loved it the minute I saw it!


The face is black, which is hard to tell from the picture, and oh, the gears. I love it.


I'm so ridiculously happy about this XD

I've always loved the idea and look of pocket watches, but I find wearing a wristwatch so much more convenient--What time is it? Just glance over at your arm, no fishing about in pockets required! Such discretion is most appreciated during boring classes.

Just think, people will ask you the time and expect you to pull out a cell phone, and instead you will produce that beautiful piece of clockwork. *envious*

I liked that about my belt loop watch too - the discreet time-checking. I luckily don't have to be in classes anymore, but I'll probably miss that functionality in boring meetings XD

Re: Ocean-jumping story - Caitirin and I went to the beach in York one day when we were undergrads, and we were just going to go in up to our knees... and then we were just going to go in a little further... and then we just got the cuffs of our shorts wet, so it was fine... then it degenerated into a full-on wave-jumping contest, and I got bowled over by one, and then we just decided it was useless to resist XD

HAHA! I've totally done that before! I was just wading for the fun of it and then got bowled over by a wave. Had to go buy clothing after the fact (it was REALLY FREAKING COLD - March!) but it was worth it.
