Richard Roxburgh/Ian Hart HOUN

I just watched the "Hound of the Baskervilles" adaptation with Richard Roxburgh as Holmes and Ian Hart as Watson. What I have to say is mostly: OMG SQUEE. There will probably be a more coherent review forthcoming. Ian Hart's Watson is up there among my very favorites already, and Richard Roxburgh's Holmes grew on me as the movie went on. The interviews on the DVD helped, with his long involved explanation of why Holmes and Watson are perfect for each other and are completely dependent on each other in order to be whole. Nothing endears me to a Holmes actor quite like him saying that the stories are not about Holmes but "Holmes-and-Watson." Squee, I say.

That was actually the first adaptation I ever saw! I saw it when it was TV in about 2001, and, basically, it made me see the slash in Holmes, so I'm pretty fond of it. Even though bits of it are awful, and, er, blond Holmes? Hrrm.

It was the very first Holmes I saw too, and it didn't yet make me a fan :D
I just got the impression that Holmes and Watson really hate each other or at least argue all the time, haha. Granada!Holmes changed that for me later then.

Yeah, I have to confess that I actively dislike this adaptation. I loved Ian Hart, I thought he was brilliant! I loathed Richard Roxburgh's Holmes. Holmes is a tricky character, if you're not careful you can come across as too much of a bastard.

I will say this for it though, it does make entertaining viewing, and must have got many people into Holmes and that's very important. It was a good bit of Christmas telly when it first aired.

Yeah, I was sad that they didn't dye the poor man's hair XD Because I thought he had the facial expressions pretty well down a lot of the time.

Oh my gosh, they SO seem to argue all the time XD I'm glad I saw it after I got into their slashiness! It's there, I swear, in that movie... just hard to see.

His Holmes really was quite a bastard, but that's not something I mind terribly unless it's unequivocal-bastard, and I thought I saw several parts where he de-bastardized for a second or two.

Ian Hart was amazing, oh my gosh.
