The Twentieth Century Begins
Mar. 12th, 2009 10:32 pmI just finished watching my last DVD of the Russian Sherlock Holmes series, "The Twentieth Century Begins." How Vasily Livanov and Vitaly Solomin can be so consistently adorable, I just don't know XD
These were... weirder by far O_o But not weird in a bad way. Just weird in a weird-and-most-of-the-time-good-way. Watson in uniform OMFG. *fans self*
Random fly-by squeeage:
Mycroft! With gadgets! XD Gadgets aplenty! He's so busy, you see, that he needs like eighteen billion telephones and telegraphs and morse code thingies tapping and clicking and ringing away in his office.
When they were talking in Mycroft's office in the second episode, and the phones and things kept ringing, and he pulls the wires out of the switchboard and Watson keeps picking up the receiver and putting it down again every time it rings XD "Shut up, phone. We're busy." While Holmes sits in the background and reads a newspaper, and Mycroft is all "Sherlock! Will you please pay attention?" *giggles* Not to mention Holmes's O_o face the first time he sees Mycroft's office with all the aforementioned ringing/clicking/tapping doohickies in it.
Top hats! BWEE! This is the only one of these movies that they've worn evening dress! *does a small dance of glee*
Watson teaching Holmes how to use the telephone XD At the end of the first episode. And Holmes is a very good sport but obviously has no clue what the hell this talky-listeny thing is for, and Watson is amused.
Speaking of telephones. That scene - with the telephone at Baker Street in the second episode - where Holmes is talking to Mycroft over the telephone and he has Watson come over to read the newspaper article out loud, and they just stand with their arms around each other for a good several-minute conversation. With obviously no intention of letting go anytime soon. *flail*
Watson's motorcycle! Bwahaha XD Holmes in the side-car! (And because, you know, everything comes back to Utena - boyfriends in sidecars, what?)
Martha! Mrs. Hudson! I LOVE that they went that route XD Why is it that everyone Watson loves lets him think they're dead in these movies?
Holmes's expression when Watson comes into the room with Von Bork and is all adorable and betrayed (what was up with that, by the way? I couldn't tell if they planned it as a distraction or something or if Watson really thought Holmes was selling secrets. Wacky departure from canon, but oh well.)
And yeah, the only part I didn't like - TOTALLY botched opportunity for a Garrideb moment, guys! For the whole episode, I thought to myself, "Wouldn't it be wonderful if they got Watson shot so Holmes could freak out?" And it wasn't outside the realm of possibility, since they stuck in random conversations from other stories, like the singed-slippers deduction. And then Watson gets shot, and Holmes does nothing. Except "Hey, the bullet grazed your face." *falls over* Although he does tell Watson he's incredible later. But I can't tell if that was sarcastic due to not knowing whether they planned the "He's Sherlock Holmes!" bit O_o
But overall! Squee! And must screencap hugging-while-on-telephone scene.

Date: 2009-03-13 02:59 am (UTC)I loved Myc's gadgets, and loved the bit where even Watson picks up the phone and slams the receiver back down with that cute little eyeroll.
And if you do cap (and post the caps of) that telephone hug scene I would worship you forever and ever. Srsly.
But yeah, in the last bit I was like...is that betrayal bit intentional? What the heck? And way to miss the angst opportunity peoplez!
Ah well, the telephone scene was so totally worth it, anyhow...

Date: 2009-03-14 01:57 pm (UTC)I wanted to use an Utena icon, but I don't have any up at the moment; but I do agree that this icon is appropriate for many things. I love it more than is reasonable. *laughs*
