elaby: (Moomintroll - bath house)

Okay, so I had this dream last night which was freaky at the time but I found it extremely cool upon waking. It was somewhat less cool (as these things usually go) when I actually got up later and thought about it, but it needs to be written down nevertheless.

In this dream, I was a young teenager living in some kind of floating house with a bunch of kids of various ages and one or two adults. We were all from different places, as if we were orphans or lost children or something. The place we lived was a large wooden structure, the floor of which was flat on the ocean's surface. It had lots of rooms, but only one story, and there was a wooden landing stretching out through a large opening like a barn door. It kind of reminded me of the theatre in Moominsummer Madness, if anyone's familiar with Tove Jansson. Anyway, it was old and dusty and dirty and wet and dark, and we kids all kind of huddled together to keep safe and warm.

One of the girls was a sea gypsy, and she had come to us with her mother. She had light brown skin and curly hair in a low ponytail. She and her mother had been left by her father and she was very hurt by it. There was something going on that I can't remember - we were all sitting in a circle and she was telling us something and people didn't believe her, but I said I did. We were laying half in the water for some reason and she kept taking pieces of ice off her body and holding them up, and they looked like slivers of smoky quartz.

Somehow there was dirt underneath the floorboards, even though we were floating on the ocean, and the adults who were with us started excavating something. We found a cache of bones and we knew that they were cursed or evil in some way, and the adults said we had to break them all to rid them of their evilness. So we snapped them although they were hard to break and I was getting wigged out because they smelled very distinctively of the grave (somehow I recognized this in the dream - I wouldn't in real life, lemme tell you). The last one we found was a bone like a circular disc (what it would have actually been, I don't know - a kneecap?) and I snapped it in three pieces. When I did this, the sea out beyond the landing rolled and a huge ball of shadow rose out of it, and I knew that we had released some kind of horror by breaking the bones. I also knew that when the wave hit us, we would feel a crippling sense of doom. The darkness came toward us with the rolling ocean and hit us, and I felt the crushing awful impending badness feeling that I knew I would.

Then a ball of vines rose out of the ocean in the middle of the shadow and came into our structure through the opening with the landing. In the middle of the ball was a woman made out of vines, and she writhed and had glowing eyes. I was the first person in her way, and vines whipped out of the ball and grabbed hold of me. I knew I would have to put the bones back together (the disc in particular) to make her go away.

At this point the dream must have tripped my brain's scary override and it went into "I can just rewind this part and not break the bones" mode, but I woke up before I managed to rewind it far enough.

I was thinking of your Sea Elf from on of the D&D's... quite an interesting detailed dream though. I likes ones like this with interesting characters and story.

That's beautiful and compelling (and did you have to stop on a cliffhanger?! :-) Makes me think of the greenwitch. And the girl with her splinters of ice is haunting. The back of my mind is telling me that's a poignant and unexpected metaphor for someone abandonned — fragments of ice on the skin, and she takes them off as she talks but always has more. But I didn't think of that when I read it first; I just shivered and thought it was beautiful.

You could write a story out of that dream. A whole novel.

I thought of Greenwitch too! After the fact, of course :) I wish I could have dreamed the rest of the story *laughs* But I think it was too scary for my brain, or something.

The girl was very important. I think I was a little bit in love with her. I wasn't me in the dream, and I was younger, 13 or so.

Thank you for suggesting that metaphor... I think you've got a really good point :)

This scares me just reading it. If I had dreamed it, I would never have wanted to go back to sleep. It is beautiful, though, and I, also, thought immediately of the Greenwitch.

It was really freaky! I remember going like "Gah, what happens next?!" when I woke up, though XD
