Ancient fandoms
Apr. 9th, 2006 10:42 amMy very first anime fandom, was, somewhat embarrassingly, Pokémon. I watched the first two and a half seasons religiously, then sort of lost interest because 1) They stopped giving Jessie and James much screen time, 2) I got into more interesting anime, and 3) I no longer had time to watch it every afternoon, and I was doing other things on Saturday mornings so I never got to see any new episodes. But recently,
caitirin and I have gotten into the habit of watching it after we get up every Saturday. There are two new episodes on at 10:00-11:00. We also have been interested in it because this season is the Hoen League (maybe season 5 or 6?), and that's the same place we're at in our Sapphire and Ruby version games, so all the Pokémon and some of the events are the same between the game and the show. They just had the Hoen League championships on the show, and Ash didn't win (O.O). He's older now and still kind of a dumbass, but more mature and just as endearing. He was travelling around with Brock and these two new characters, May and Max, this season. So anyway, the episode that was on yesterday was sort of the "end of season" episode, where everybody goes home. But OMFG, it had ALL SORTS of stuff in it.
Jessie and James went back to Team Rocket headquarters, and not only did we get to see The Boss (Giovanni *laughs* They call him "Giovanni, sir" all the time, and you can just tell that it's "Sakaki-sama" they're saying) we got to see, wonder of wonders, Butch and Cassidy. Who, unless I missed them in those seasons I didn't watch, we haven't seen since at LEAST season 2, if not season 1. Jessie and James also got a new motto, updating theirs from the one they've had since the very beginning of the show, and while reciting it, James had his rose in his mouth - another thing that's been missing since around early season 2. The animation was also better in this episode.
After leaving May and Max to go off to wherever they live, and then departing from Brock (who I think was going to Pewter Town, if I remember where his gym is) Ash went on towards Pallet Town, stopping at the Veridian City gym on the way. He decided to go off on some new quest, where I think he'll be fighting the Elite *insert number here*. He headed off home then, and wonder of wonders 2, who should be waiting for him but Misty. I don't know when we last got to see her, but it was certainly sometime before the start of the Hoen region trip, if not the Johto/Kanto trip (whichever it was, I missed it, and haven't seen her since early season 3). Anyway, she has new clothes and is much cuter (and looks older too). Ash/Misty shippers were probably disappointed, as she looked happy to see him, but Ash was just kind of like "Uh, hi..." Pikachu, however, rocketed into her arms and called her by name*.
Needless to say, that was one damn delightful episode. And I need a Pokémon icon, like
caitirin has.
Spent yesterday doing homework (whee), rescuing
hak42 from a boring fate at the Market Square bus stop, eating Chinese food, and watching Mirrormask. Was a pretty good day, all-in-all.
* Yes, geek that I am, I know a few words in Pikachu language. Blame Otani Ikue, Pikachu's voice actress, for making up words. You can hear the similiarities to the names. Pikapi = Satoshi (Ash), Pi-kachupi = Kasumi (Misty), Pipipi = Togepi, Pikakapika = Fushigidane (Bulbasaur), etc. Pikachu also has a "Brock face" that he makes when he means Brock. The one you hear the most, though, maybe even once an episode, is Pikapi. Also quite obvious if you watch the first movie, in which Ash gets turned to stone and Pikachu revives him with his Magic Pokémon Healing Tears *sporfle*
