Holy crap Gackt angst

And I thought the Kimi no Tame ni Dekiru Koto video was angsty.

I'm
really glad we found a copy of Moonchild, the movie Gackt and Hyde (who
is another J-rocker) did. I was going to get a burnt copy from Mike,
but he said his copy had really funky subtitles and with them, the
movie made little sense. The subtitles on our DVD we just bought were
really good, and the movie was very coherent. I was expecting some kind
of crazy cyperpunk psychadelic thing, and it was really just your
standard, UBER-angstified gang war type movie.

With vampires. Yeah.

I
was under the impression that Gackt and Hyde came up with the idea like
Koyasu Takehito came up with Weiss Kreuz, and if they did, I have no
doubt left in my mind what an angst whore Gackt is. But damn,
is he ever gorgeous when he cries. Hyde was rather good himself (he's
so tiny!) as the classic "OMG I am filled with self-loathing because I
am a murdering monster" vampire.

Rachel and I totally
predicted the ending. Except one part ended up happier than we thought
it would. By the end there we were imagining character genocide, but it
ended up (slightly) less widespread than that. WICKED good, though. And
angsty. So very, very angsty. So angsty we laughed half the time. (The
other times we were sniffling, of course, but that's what happens with
good actors.)

They really fancified the lyrics of Orenji no
Taiyou, though. You know, that song I sometimes blather about how great
it is? It comes from this movie. As well as most of the other songs
from the Crescent album (which I just adore). Hyde's character would
sing bits of it in the movie occasionally (though they never played the
whole thing, even in the credits, and the whole thing is beyond
beautiful) and they subtitled it much wordier than it actually is. But
that's okay, because I'm probably missing nuances with my literal
translation.

Wheeeeeee! This is actually the first live-action Japanese movie that I didn't kind of go *... eyebrow raise?*
