Earthsea

Anybody out there a fan of Ursula K. Le Guin?

Studio Ghibli's doing a movie of one of her Earthsea books.

Info Here

I've never read anything of hers, but I always meant to. Can you imagine being a contemporary writer and having Miyazaki animate one of your books? I think I would die of joy.

Okay, technically this is Goro Miyazaki and not Hayao, but I imagine that's a relative. Maybe the one who did The Cat Returns. It's still Ghibli, at any rate.

Wow *_*

ETA warning, [livejournal.com profile] anonymous_greg! Though I doubt any of it will be very funny ^_^

[ETA: Okay, apparently the film is going to be based mostly on book 3 of the Tales of Earthsea series, The Farthest Shore. Goro is Hayao's son, and has never animated before, but the Evangelion director guy and the Lupin III director guy were both very impressed by his drawings, and recommended him. Hayao was busy working on Howl's Moving Castle during the production of this. Apparently they don't get along O.o Origially, Le Guin said that if anyone was going to make a movie of her books, it had to be Hayao Miyazaki ^_^ But she met with his son and approved the switch.]

Indeed! The poster, which he drew, looks gorgeous.

It looks like it'll be really cool :)

Being a fan...

I saw this when it was originally announced and thought it would be interesting. The few concept sketches they released were of good quality, so I'm hoping this comes off good and leaves the Sci-Fi channel production of the first two books in the dust, choking. (Wasn't a fan...)

I think the third book kind of fits the Studio Ghibli storytelling pattern, as well. This is going to be a movie that is dependent mainly upon character exchanges of philosophy. Should be interesting...

And hey, maybe they'll actually color the main character as a Pacific Islander like he should be, this time.

I was thinking it might be :) I imagine they'll do a good job. It might not be up to Hayao Miyazaki standards, but I bet it'll be cool nonetheless.

O_O Oh. Oh wow! *squees*

That's -perfect-. You should really read the Tales of Earthsea series - they're a quick read, but engrossing and the story is classic. ^^ I think you'd really like them.

I totally should! I always found the name intriguing, but I never got around to borrowing them from the library.

I read Howl's Moving Castle after I saw the movie, and I was glad I'd read it after, because it was so different... I can appreciate both of them now, instead of picking out what they changed in the movie.

Urula LeGuin is fantastic. She has done some other fantastic stuff apart from the Earthsea books. The Left Hand of Darkness (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Left_Hand_of_Darkness) is especially good, it's sci-fi meets gender politics, and The Dispossessed (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Dispossessed) is a sci-fi look into the viability of Anarchism as a political system. And they really aren't as dull as I just made them sound.

And i'm with the general hope that this doesn't mess up the story as much as the sci-fi channel did.

Oooh, I like gender politics :) Sounds really interesting! I'll definitely have to check her out.
