Simon info post
Jul. 18th, 2006 04:04 pmI swear, someday I'll post about PotC: DMC. Because it was JUST THAT AWESOME. But for right now, I'm posting a chuck of Simon information I wrote up because the only bio I have in my files is laughably out of date.
Simon Frost
Age: 163 (vampire, born in 1843)
Height: 6'0''
Build: On the larger side of average-muscular. Think farm hand or cowboy.
Eyes: Brown
Hair: Dark blond, not long enough to be "long hair" but long enough to look like he needs a haircut, perpetually messy.
Likes: Horses, the sun, camping, hunting, fishing, being alone with nature, trains, his sunglasses, playing the fiddle, Cai, poker, Etienne, sun tea.
Dislikes: Crowded places, being accused of cheating at poker, Legends of the Fall (supposedly), Carmen, deep water, cops.
Born in Missouri near the Kansas border, Simon was caught up in fighting between abolitionists and pro-slavery people all the time he was growing up. He lived on a farm with his parents, older brother Daniel, and younger brother Nicholas. His father was from the area, but his mother was from high-society Atlanta. Despite her background, they had very little money.
Simon joined the Confederate side of the Civil War in October of 1864, when he was 21, because they offered to pay him. His battalion was possibly the worst in the entire war. The commanding officer was a loony who wanted to win the war simply to win it, and had forgotten the whole reason his side was fighting. He recruited anyone he could get, white guys and black guys and Native American guys and whoever would fight for money. They all had second-rate equipment and generally sucked at fighting in any organized fashion. They spent a lot of their time lazing around playing poker and dice games. Simon made particular friends with a very large and burly ex-slave, who was killed in one of the first battles their battalion fought. After seeing what could happen to someone twice his size, Simon decided that this had been a singularly bad idea. He deserted and fled in early January of 1865. While running, he fell down an icy hill and into a lake. He would have drowned if Carmen, a Creole vampire, had not pulled him out. Simon never found out who saved him, but this wouldn't be the last time Carmen interfered with his life.
After the war ended, Simon joined a gang of outlaws and robbed trains. He eventually became the leader of his own gang and was an outlaw for five years. During this time, Carmen was the leader of another gang, and Simon incurred his eternal wrath by showing up at a richly laden train just before Carmen was about to rob it and robbing it himself. For stealing his heist, Carmen determined to make Simon's life miserable. Making Simon into a vampire was the best way he could think of to do this.
However, Carmen tends to forget about things for years on end. Simon went on being an outlaw and robbing trains with Carmen as his rival. In 1870, when Simon was 27, his little brother Nicholas, who Simon (against his better judgment) allowed to come with them on a heist or two, was killed by a rival gang. The ramifications of his profession were driven home and Simon gave up outlawry. He became a snake-oil salesman after that, selling fake remedies and traveling around towns in the mid-west and west for nine years until Carmen finally got around to enacting his revenge. When Simon was in Baton Rouge in the fall of 1879, Carmen shot him from behind and turned him into a vampire then and there. Simon was 36.
After this, he and Carmen roomed together, in a kind of "I despise you but need you to survive" sort of relationship. They had many arguments and eventually, when Simon felt used to life as a vampire, he left. Carmen's plan - that becoming a vampire would destroy Simon - backfired, as Simon didn't really mind at all. The one thing that bothered him was that he sure missed the sun.
Simon did various things over the next century or so. Living alone in the woods comprised a lot of the years, as did selling worthless trinkets to tourists for lots of money. He was generally a hermit for many of the US wartime years, and so missed that portion of history. In 1974, he met Cai, and through a series of events protecting two young boys, they became very close friends. In this time, Carmen resurfaced again and caused much trouble, and a sun serum was developed by scientists that allowed Simon to walk in the sun again. In 1998, he found Cai missing and participated in her rescue from the Council of Elders' tortures. Since then, he's been trying to help Cai recover by being quietly supportive and otherwise pretending nothing happened. He feels instrumental in getting Cai emotionally ready to date Mei.

Date: 2006-07-20 01:35 am (UTC)I like that he was an outlaw, and apparently good at it. And then a snake-oil salesman! He just appeals to me.
I'm glad you're putting him in with Cai and Mei. I like the fact that he's settled down and is helping Cai. What's his personality like? Grumpy, but with a good heart?

He was actually "with" Cai before Mei was, though they have the most platonic relationship ever. It's tricky with the three of them, because Mei gets Cai like nobody else does, but Simon gets Cai in ways even Mei doesn't. And Mei and Cai still have a slight new-relationship-jittery thing, while Simon and Cai are utterly confortable with each other and with their extremely close bond.

You know me too well ^_^
Simon can be gruff, but he's generally good-natured. When he was an outlaw, he was a pretty sincerely bad person, but he's significantly mellowed since then. He doesn't have many qualms about bamboozling people, but he's kind of grown out of taking pleasure in that, too. He's got a large "nurturing older brother" streak. He also doesn't have many friends (I can think of two or three, maybe) and so he makes sure to take care of them. Other than those friends, he likes to be alone, and really gets into quietly appreciating nature without being activist in any way. He also likes Tom Petty.
Any other questions? *bounces* ^_^

He really is the type that appeals to me, and the fact that he was an outlaw in the Old West just adds to that.

Oooooh, this description makes me like him even more. I think it's really cool that he likes Tom Petty. That just fits him, somehow.

I can't think of any, except do you have any excerpts or stand-alone stories that feature him? I'd love to read them. He grabs my interest much like Flynn did.

Here's one, but it's VERY angsty ^^;; http://elaby.livejournal.com/70815.html You must have read his info post since this is a comment on it, so you'll know who Nicholas and Carmen are. I wrote this during my Anthropology class ¬_¬
