June Nano and X3

First day of Nano's count is at 2,500 something words, and I'm excited about writing, which is more than I can say about last November! Also, for the first time since 2003, [livejournal.com profile] caitirin and I stayed up until midnight on the first so we could start RIGHT then. We went for about an hour and a half and then collapsed into bed.

Yesterday was filled with all sorts of excitement, such as a trip to the Federal Building to get [livejournal.com profile] caitirin some necessary financial aid objects, lunch at Flatbread with the best pizza EVER (seriously), some grocery shopping, and then X-Men 3 *tempted to use the :3 face because that's what X3 reminds her of*

The movie was really cool. I realized about fifteen minutes into it, however, that I'd never seen the second movie... which posed a bit of a problem, since I had no idea what everyone was so upset about ^^;; We rented the first two last night and watched the second one, so things made more sense in light of that. I have very little knowledge of the comic, so I have some questions for those in the know:

- Why is Charles Xavier in a wheelchair? This may have been explained in the first movie, but I don't remember much of THAT, either. I'll be watching it tonight, though.
- Why isn't Gambit in the movies? Was there ever any explanation for this?
- What's up with Erik's concentration-camp-like number tattoo?
- Are Charles and Erik not everyone's favorite older Shakespearean actor OTP, or what? (slightly rhetorical question)

Anyway, I really liked X3. There were, as [livejournal.com profile] dakegra pointed out, plenty of plot holes (omg alliteration) but I really enjoyed it nonetheless. I also think the last 2 seconds of the film were BRILLIANT. And of course, the stay-through-the-credits bit :)

Now to work! I want to post Auber sometime today.

[edit: And happy birthday to [livejournal.com profile] ketsuki! Joy and Pocky to you ^_^ ]

[edit the second: I declair it "Stabby!Anthy icon time."]

Charles has always been in a wheelchair with regard to X-Men, right from the first X-Men comic book. He's a parapalegic.

- Why isn't Gambit in the movies? Was there ever any explanation for this?

Not all characters from the X-Men lore have been used. Probably because the moviemakers had plenty of characters to deal with as it was. Warren Worthington III (Angel) was only barely included in X-Men III -- and he was one of the original X-Men!

- What's up with Erik's concentration-camp-like number tattoo?

I didn't remember this from the days I used to read X-Men comics, but apparently his having been a prisoner at Auschwitz was established during the '80s (I dont' believe I was reading them at that point).

[identity profile] caitirin.livejournal.com 2006-06-02 01:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, they had a scene with Erik in the concentration camp being separated from his parents in the first movie.

[identity profile] anonymous-greg.livejournal.com 2006-06-02 01:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Ohhh, I'd forgotten about that!

[identity profile] caitirin.livejournal.com 2006-06-02 01:11 pm (UTC)(link)
It was one of the things that really stuck with me because I was really surprised by it!

[identity profile] anonymous-greg.livejournal.com 2006-06-02 01:12 pm (UTC)(link)
That's 'cause you were never a little kid in Germany at that time. *nods*

[identity profile] caitirin.livejournal.com 2006-06-02 01:13 pm (UTC)(link)
This is true! I was a little kid in Germany at a different time.

[identity profile] anonymous-greg.livejournal.com 2006-06-02 01:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Eggzackly.

[identity profile] elaby.livejournal.com 2006-06-02 01:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Hee :)

[identity profile] elaby.livejournal.com 2006-06-02 01:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Ah, forgot that ^^;; Good thing we're watching it tonight!

[identity profile] anonymous-greg.livejournal.com 2006-06-02 01:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Narf?

[identity profile] elaby.livejournal.com 2006-06-02 01:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Charles has always been in a wheelchair with regard to X-Men, right from the first X-Men comic book. He's a parapalegic.

Wasn't he standing when they went to see Jean in this last movie? That must have just been a change from the comics.

I didn't remember this from the days I used to read X-Men comics, but apparently his having been a prisoner at Auschwitz was established during the '80s (I dont' believe I was reading them at that point).

Aah, I see. I thought it was some kind of mutant-camp angst thing. Thanks :)

[identity profile] merrick42.livejournal.com 2006-06-02 01:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Appending to the above comments, yes, Magneto is a former concentration camp victim from WWII (they don't name the particular camp until the 1980s, as [livejournal.com profile] anonymous_greg points out), which makes his mutant supremacy actions very tragic. He and Xavier had met at a hospital in the late 1940s/early 1950s and formed a friendship based on their desire to help people and their mutant powers. Later, both were trying to stop a theft/kidnapping when rocks fell from a ledge due to a stray gunshot, trapping and paralyzing Xavier.

I seeeee! Thank you. I figured the Rich Who Knows Many Things might have some answers :)

which makes his mutant supremacy actions very tragic.

No kidding O.o

[identity profile] merrick42.livejournal.com 2006-06-02 01:24 pm (UTC)(link)
In the comics, during an anniversary issue, they actually had Magneto (during his change of heart/good guy phase) turn himself over to a human rights court to face terrorist charges. That was in about 1985 or 1986.

[identity profile] elaby.livejournal.com 2006-06-02 01:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Wow. I didn't know he had a good guy phase.

[identity profile] merrick42.livejournal.com 2006-06-02 02:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Yep, he was leading the X-Men and teaching the trainees while Xavier was in space getting his thing on with alien empresses. He would later lose it and become a villain again, attempting to forge a nation through intimidation and violence, but for a while he was pretty sane.

[identity profile] elaby.livejournal.com 2006-06-02 02:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Interesting!

[identity profile] elaby.livejournal.com 2006-06-02 03:05 pm (UTC)(link)
I just found out that we're supposed to be taking you to Becca and Jason's wedding, so is it okay if we pick you up at 10 on Saturday at your house? We have to get your friend the photographer at that time too, and we're getting her at the Citizen's bank.

[identity profile] merrick42.livejournal.com 2006-06-02 05:35 pm (UTC)(link)
I was originally going to arrange to go with you and Kurt, but I have no problems w/ switching that. I'll see you and [livejournal.com profile] caitirin at around 10am. I'll just need room in your trunk for my stereo...it won't take up much room.

[identity profile] elaby.livejournal.com 2006-06-02 05:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Sure, we moved stuff around last weekend, so we've got lots of space now :) I think Tanya and Kurt have the tent stuff, and that was why they weren't sure they'd have room for another passenger.

[identity profile] anonymous-greg.livejournal.com 2006-06-02 02:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Ohhh, thanks for filling in the gaps. It's been far too long since I read the X-men comics (to put it in perspective, I was reading comics before Spiderman and the Fantastic Four came on the scene). I can see I am getting hazy on some things.

[identity profile] merrick42.livejournal.com 2006-06-02 03:13 pm (UTC)(link)
No worries, considering all that happens in the comics from writer to writer its really hard to keep track of as the years stack on. I've been reading since 1979/1980 and even for me things blend together. Imagine being a Legion of Super-Heroes and having to keep track of 4 or so different versions of the universe that all feed back into one another. *chuckles*

[identity profile] caitirin.livejournal.com 2006-06-02 01:05 pm (UTC)(link)
The concentration camp like tattoo is exactly that. He was a little kid in Germany at the time.

[identity profile] elaby.livejournal.com 2006-06-02 01:16 pm (UTC)(link)
I had no idea!

[identity profile] ketsuki.livejournal.com 2006-06-02 09:19 pm (UTC)(link)
@¯@ Pocccckkkkky =Q Merci!

XD I think anything I could say on the xmen questions has been said.

[identity profile] hellziggy.livejournal.com 2006-06-02 10:07 pm (UTC)(link)
- Are Charles and Erik not everyone's favorite older Shakespearean actor OTP, or what?

And yet, everyone ignored this question...
If my brain were to go to slashy places that first scene at Jean's house might have gone there...
But we don't go slashy places with Patrick Stewart because he is Mine! All Mine!

[identity profile] elaby.livejournal.com 2006-06-03 01:09 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, I see! Okay ^_^ I totally agree with your "If" scenario :)
