Getting things accomplished!
I've got one of the pictures drawn that I'd been hoping to do! And I'm pretty happy with it XD I would say that the pencils for two people, one of which has legs and the other of which I didn't bother drawing legs, with pretty complicated costumes and poses (for me), takes me about two hours. Maybe a little less taking into account distraction time. Now just to make sure I don't smudge it before I get a chance to scan it o_o
Last night we watched Who Framed Roger Rabbit on
caitirin's computer, and it was fantastic as always (what better movie for old-time animation fans? It's got cameos by essentially EVERYBODY XD) We had the usual "Is that actually Mel Blanc?" discussion (it was, except for Yosemite Sam and Foghorn Leghorn, for some reason) and played "OMG did you see X character?" in the entrance to Toon Town sequence. Bwee ^_^
Then I watched the first two episodes of To Play the King, because
caitirin is the most patient wife ever XD
Watching this the second time was even more brilliant than the first time around. When I watched it the first time, I knew Stamper would get hold of the Mattie Storin tape, try to release it to the public, and consequently be offed by Urquhart, but I didn't suspect they would ever actually suggest that Stamper was to any degree in love with Urquhart, as much as
caitirin and I joked about it. But the second time seeing it, lord is it ever obvious.
I remember the first time I saw the scene where Urquhart offers him the position of party chairman, I wondered why Stamper looked so scared when he was getting what I thought he wanted - recognition for his loyalty and a position of power. Watching it this time, though, I realized the significance of the dialogue - when offered the position, Stamper is bewildered but grateful, but then Urquhart says he'll give him anything within his power... and he asks Stamper to tell him what he wants most. And Stamper gives him this look that is absolutely freaking terrified, and then replies that he wants whatever Urquhart thinks is best for him... because he clearly can't say that what he wants most is him. I also didn't realize the first time that it was Stamper in all of the scenes where we see gloved hands taking the Mattie Storin tape out of the locked box. It's perfectly obvious the second time, because of the way the scenes are set up (Urquhart refuses to tell Stamper when the general election will be and then shoos him out to talk with Sarah Harding, cue jealous glares of utter hatred, then we see someone retrieve the tape, etc). But even more so, it's obvious because of the way the unseen person handles the tape - he positively caresses it. And when he's on the phone with Urquhart, he just looks so devastated by the way Urquhart talks to him, and so torn, and--! *incoherent fangirliness* The poor bastard. He's such a horrible person, but Colin Jeavons portrays him with such complexity (seriously amazing for a peripheral character) that he's sympathetic all the same.
Need to screencap this for icons! And, like, every other DVD I own. LJ needs a "squeeful" mood.

OMGyes! Clearly! The tragic thing is that if Urquhart hadn't pushed him away in favour of Sarah in the early stages Stamper may have been content with whatever bit of attention Urquhart threw his way. In the end Stamper just feels too betrayed.
There is a scene that always elicits a sympathetic whimper from me. The scene where Stamper is trying to talk to Urquhart and Urquhart is just brushing him off then you see Sarah come through the door. When he realises who it is, his shoulders sag and he just looks so hurt and disappointed.
The tape caressing is also seriously creepy isn't it? I do sometimes wonder whether Stamper saw it all coming in a way. After all to protect him he might have been tempted to destroy the tape, but he keeps it just in case.
I remember once for a creative writing exercise I wrote two really short pieces on HoC and TPtK from Stampers POV. I wonder where that is.
He is a horrible character though! Sometimes I try to picture Stamper's Britain and it conjures up an Orwellian dystopia in my mind. *shudders* I still love him though.
I need screencaps too, but my lecturer has my DVD and I won't be getting it back till September! September!
PS. Who Framed Roger Rabbit makes me ridiculously happy! I love it so much!

Seriously! I think he was really very surprised to be offered the position of party chairman. And then when the initial shock and fright wore off, he was so fiercely intense about doing well. He had some line like "We'll grind their asses into the ground" and it totally had this "please please like me I swear I won't let you down" undertone.
When he realises who it is, his shoulders sag and he just looks so hurt and disappointed.
Aww, yeah, and CJ is so incredibly good at that kind of thing, isn't he? The scene I mentioned in my post, where he looked terrified to be asked what he really wanted, totally reminded me Lestrade in a lot of your fics, (Break and The Accident in particular) being all horrified by the idea of Holmes finding out how he feels. Which, of course, made me squee even more.

Ooh, you're right... I never thought about it from that angle, but it makes perfect sense character-wise for Stamper to know that Urquhart dropping him one day would be a distinct possibility.

If you ever find them, I would LOVE to read them!

That's possibly the nicest thing anyone's ever said about my fics!
I'll have a look for those fics. I'm pretty organized when it comes to my work so they shouldn't be difficult to find.
