The Final Problem and The Empty House
I just listened to my newly acquired BBC Radio play adaptations of The Final Problem and The Empty House, and they were everything I hoped they would be and more. I was a little worried that they were going to be horrifically depressing, what with Holmes's "death" followed hard after by Mary's actual death, but they were both wonderfully done, with just enough horribleness to make you go oh god but not enough to, say, make me want to curl up under the bed. Michael Williams as Watson was utterly brilliant throughout. Clive Merrison is always fantastic, but I don't think I've ever heard him better than in The Final Problem. He was slightly less fantastic in The Empty House, but I think that's probably just because I wanted him to be a little bit more remorseful than he was. This was most likely Jeremy Brett's fault - in the scene in the Granada episode of this story, Holmes's tentative regret is tangible, and I can't imagine a better interpretation of the scene. However, that's not to say the radio version was lacking at all. It was utterly wonderful, and included something the Granada version necessarily didn't since it ignored the whole Mary thing - Holmes asking Watson to move back in at Baker Street. It was so typical Holmes, and utterly perfect.
And now I'm watching The Illustrious Client, which I have from Netflix. *insert obligatory chokesplorfle at seeing H&W in the Turkish bath at the beginning*
