Doctor Who slang

[livejournal.com profile] _melisande_ and [livejournal.com profile] margaritarussa, I found out what "chav" means on Wikipedia :)

Chav

"Chav, Charv/Charver (male) and Chavette (female) ('ch' pronounced as in chair) are mainly derogatory slang terms in the United Kingdom for a subcultural stereotype fixated on fashions derived from American Hip-hop such as imitation gold jewellery and designer clothing, combined with elements of working class British street fashion."

To all of our UK friends, I thought I'd look it up before asking you, but your interpretations and explanations as to what a chav is are welcome :)

In conclusion - OMG SQUEE DOCTOR WHO. Just saw the first handful of episodes of the 10th Doctor (and have seen all of the 9th Doctor episodes).

And happy birthday to you, my love ^_^

I'd add to the definition of "chav" a trndency to be obnoxious, offensive or even violent. I wouldn't refer to a polite, well-behaved person as a chav, regardless of their appearance. For me, it's the particular combination of ostentatiously tacky style and lack of consideration for others that makes a chav.

Tendency. Can't type properly with one hand. :-(

Ah, interesting! Thanks :)

It seems to have become a general term for self-centred, gaudily dressed (usually in cheap designer brands), loud mouthed young people. Apparently it's the 'poorer' classes that qualify, but there are one or two so called members of the better off sections of society that I'd include.

Some of them seem to think of Chav as a compliment ...

Huh, that's interesting! Thanks for commenting :)

Doctor Who was so much fun, and I haven't ever seen any of it before!

And OMG icon love. :)

Heeee ^_^ We were all really glad you came and that you liked Doctor Who!

The Wikipedia entry also mentions a bunch of those things the Doctor said when he was demonstrating that he was up on the modern lingo in the school episode.

wow, why didn't I think of looking these things up on the computer before? You are brilliant!

[identity profile] elaby.livejournal.com 2007-09-24 11:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Naww, no way ^_^

[identity profile] margaritarussa.livejournal.com 2007-09-24 02:31 am (UTC)(link)
I agree with Bethany - you are brilliant!

And I second you on the Dr. Who Squee-ness!

Ooo! Ooo! I just had an amazing idea... we should have a Dr. Who halloween party... and each of us can dress up as a different companion!

[identity profile] elaby.livejournal.com 2007-09-24 11:08 pm (UTC)(link)
XD That would ROCK. Except I'd have to find out what the other companions look like!

Caitirin says that's a GREAT idea!
