Okay, so I'm writing something for publication - that is, I'm going to be submitted it in response to a call for submissions for a short story anthology and that's all I'm going to say about it for now - and I just finished a first draft. The submission deadline is March 31, so I'm pretty good time-wise. I'm about 250 words below the limit, and hopefully I can cut extraneous things and I won't find anything huge in my revisions that need, like, extra hundreds of words' explanation e_e

But anyway. Proud of self, a little bit. *does a small happy dance* There are even bits of it that I think rather don't suck! I think that's a good sign!

Drabbles

Two drabbles from the drabble meme! More will be coming when I figure out what to write for them ^^;;

Sherlock Holmes drabble for [livejournal.com profile] fiery_lioness. This takes place after The Speckled Band.
My friend kept very unusual hours. )

Flynn and Kishi for [livejournal.com profile] coastal_spirit. This takes place the morning after the infamous "sex on the desk" scene you like so much XD
The morning after )

Give me the names of two characters and I will tell you why character A loves character B. I might answer with a drabble, a quickbit of meta, or a list, just to make things that tiny bit more OMGSOEXCITING!

Gawd, everyone on DeviantArt is so WANKY. Why I should be surprised at this, I have no idea.

On to more interesting things!

Conversation in the car this evening:

[livejournal.com profile] elaby and [livejournal.com profile] caitirin: *talking about previous Nanos, and how it's very Nano-like to skip important plot explanation or transition or character development because you don't feel like writing it*

[livejournal.com profile] elaby: But with my first Nano*, I wrote that completely in line. Linear. I didn't leave any bits out.
[livejournal.com profile] caitirin: Me too!
[livejournal.com profile] elaby: I realized the major problem with that story, though - I resolved the conflict I was interested in long before I resolved the conflict that made up the actual plot.
[livejournal.com profile] caitirin: Which one was this again?
[livejournal.com profile] elaby: Ali and Etoile**.
[livejournal.com profile] caitirin: Right, right!
[livejournal.com profile] elaby: So I resolved the thing I was interested in, that being Ali and Etoile's relationship, way before...
[livejournal.com profile] caitirin: The political maneuvering overthrow of the government plot.
[livejournal.com profile] elaby: Exactly. And since I wasn't really interested anymore, I was just like "Meh! Etoile has some shiny bracelets that do this thing, and POOF, that's it. Everything's fixed."
[livejournal.com profile] caitirin: Hey, I think Deus ex Jewelria is just fine.
[livejournal.com profile] elaby: *sporfle!*

*The one, for those unaware, with Ali and Etoile.
**The amnesiac and the transgendered princess respectively.

Another piece for the First Kiss Meme. This one's for [livejournal.com profile] templarwolf (posted today in honor of Enoch) using his awesome characters Kakita Goemon and Doji Hiroe. I really hope I wrote them well and didn't do anything that goes against canon. I definitely enjoyed writing this one.

--

It was the week of the Spirit Festival, and one of the artisans had made Hiroe a pinwheel from a piece of bamboo and some stiff paper. The paper was off-white, not painted or bleached, but its own original color. Goemon saw her with it when he was walking with his family down to their ancestral household to pay respects at the large family shrine. Hiroe’s family was doing the same, though theirs was on the other side of town, and Goemon summoned enough courage to smile at her as they passed. She smiled back as easily as breathing, and he felt a little giddy.

Another First Kiss meme response, again for [livejournal.com profile] jiatra :) I I like this one better than the last one.

Characters: Tenjou Utena and Ophelia, um, of Elsinore.
Words: 780
Notes: I made absolutely no attempt to explain why they're in the same universe. When I was writing it, in my head I imagined them being in Ophelia-land (Denmark, I suppose) but they really could be in either. This takes place, for Utena, after the end of the series, so all revolutionizing of the world has happened. For Ophelia, this'd be after her father died and before, uh, she died.

-

They were sitting together on the riverbank with the water five feet below, and Utena had taken off her shoes and socks. They lay in a pile in the grass beside her. Ophelia’s sandals had slipped so far off her dangling feet that one hung on her toe by a leather strap, and Utena winced every time she bounced it. Those sandals were destined for the bottom of the river, she thought.

Another of the First Kiss challenge drabble-type things. This one is for [livejournal.com profile] jiatra :) Er, it's not so fantastic... sorry, Jia :\ The Utena/Ophelia one will be better. I've got a draft of that one already.

Elizabeth Swann and Captain Kirk
Words: 570
Notes: As I haven't seen the new PotC movie yet, there are no spoilers for that. Or for anything, really, except maybe this takes place sometime during the beginning-middlish of Dead Man's Chest. *shrugs* At any rate, there's no attempt to stick to the timeline, and only a very small attempt at explaining what Kirk is doing in 18th century Port Royal.

--

Elizabeth wasn’t sure how the man got there, but he was wearing the strangest clothes she had ever seen: there was practically nothing to them, just plain, stretched cloth trousers and a shirt with a tiny insignia on the breast. The sleeves were decorated with a gold band or two, but other than that, his outfit was strangely devoid of ornamentation. He had called himself “Captain” when he introduced himself, but he wore neither a hat nor a frock coat nor any sort of pins or epaulettes to signify his rank. He also talked funny.

I had a whole review of manga Hamlet written last night, and for some reason it wouldn't post to LJ then or this morning before work. Oh well! I'll do it when I get home. *at [livejournal.com profile] caitirin's library now as was let out of work early wheeeee*

I've finished my first drabble response for the First Kiss Meme. It's for [livejournal.com profile] dakegra to thank him for manga Hamlet squee :) His request was "Molly and the Cute Barista" both of whom belong to [livejournal.com profile] dakegra.

---

“It’s really been the worst morning,” the cute barista said apologetically to Molly as the two of them knelt behind the counter, mopping up cinnamon latte with paper towels.

Spilt coffee )

More to come as I finish them, because these are FUN and everybody's giving me great challenges ^_^

Yes, I'm a great big dork. I wrote fanfic for The Moonstone.

Title: Sympathy
Fandom: The Moonstone
Pairings: Ezra Jennings/Franklin Blake unrequited
Rating: G
Summary: Franklin Blake POV. Taking place after the first few days of Franklin's second tobacco withdrawal (towards the end of the book), Ezra Jennings checks on Franklin's condition and finds him predictably morose.
Notes: Spoilers for events near the end of the book are mentioned.

Over at rarelitslash

Wheeeeeee n_n

[Edit in June, 07: I'm going to post the fic here too, in case rarelitslash ever explodes or something.]

Character: Pansy Parkinson
Candy: Blood-flavored lollipops

I am definitely the only one out of four non-specialist type people who is here today O_o Dee and Sharon are on vacation, and Mary is probably sick again, seeing as she's not here yet and she's usually here before me.

Nobody better call with any questions I don't know!

It's raining and I have my previous Nano's characters on the brain, specifically Owen and Jolan.

I swear there was a challenge somewhere once, in a drabble community, that was "On the Edge", but I haven't gone to look yet. Which has nothing to do with Owen and Jolan, but that's okay.

Most of the lights are off here, too, so it's just really weird.

Can't find "On the Edge" as a drabble challenge, but... I haven't looked very hard. Maybe I'll just write it and pretend I didn't imagine the challenge.

Fandom: Amber
Characters: Julian
Challenge: On the Edge, whether that challenge existed anywhere or not.
Words: 100
Notes: Context - Corwin shows up in Julian's forest after 400 or so earth years of MIA-ness. Julian's dogs try to eat Corwin's car, and Corwin eventually takes Julian sort-of hostage. After getting information out of him, Corwin sends him to the edge of a cliff, tells him to look down, and to remember that anyone else would have made him jump.

Did Corwin wonder why Julian wasn’t surprised to see him, after that long?

He had expected Corwin to ask him that, after being grilled on the situation of things back home. Of course, Julian had also expected to have the answers tortured out of him.

He hated being surprised.

Why? Why? He stood with his feet as far from the edge of the cliff as he thought Corwin would allow, looking down into the faraway depths, winds from below lifting and twisting his hair.

The Corwin he knew, loathed, would have killed him. He hated not understanding what had changed.

SO dead in here today. Head aches. *furbles about wanting to write and not work*

A 100-word piece conspicuously inspired by what I'm listening to now...

The light is orange with the tint of sunset.

Airess is five years old. Her hair is shoulder-length and wavy - it would straighten at puberty. She zigzags, running, through the shadow of her father walking before her. Her arms are filled with wildflowers. He turns, waits, puts his fingers on her shoulder to keep her close.

It's darker but still tinged orange, and she's sitting inside with him. She's on a high stool, dangling legs in buckle shoes and white stockings. He shows her how to play string games with colorful yarn.

"I'm going to be like you, Dad."
