elaby: (Starsky & Hutch - Dance)
I've been having some stomach trouble over the last several months and the gastroenterologist I'm seeing has asked me to start avoiding dairy, eggs, wheat, soy, and nuts for a month. I know lots of people with varying food habits and choices and restrictions, so I wanted to ask you all for suggestions about anything in these categories that you like to eat.

Since I already don't eat meat, with this dietary change, I'll be eating vegan, wheat-free, soy-free, and nut-free. I'm particularly interested in sources of protein, snacks, and breakfast (I feel like lunch and dinner might be easier).

My wonderful mother has been looking up recipes online for me, but I also wanted to ask all of you, because I know what fabulous cooks some of you are and I'd love to hear any ideas that you have. <3

Thank you! I'm looking forward to seeing if this makes me feel better. I figure it can only make me healthier!

P.S. We watched the "new" Starsky and Hutch movie last night (with Ben Stiller and Owen Wilson) and I wasn't expecting to like it, but it was really good XD They OBVIOUSLY did their research, apart from the weird personality-switch they inflicted on the boys. I expect they did that because this was their "first meeting" story rather than the "known you for years" era of the show. I was impressed by the homages: we swore that they used the same sets and on-location scenes that were in the show, and there were shots that were straight-up recreations of shots from the openings and stuff. And of course they kept pointing out how much they TOUCH each other XD The cameos were worth the price of the DVD, too. AND THEY HAD THE SWEATER. The horrendous, amazing sweater that Starsky wears in the earlier episodes. I love that sweater.

I love this Illustration Friday thing! This week's prompt was "Focus". I drew Hutch :3 I have so had Starsky and Hutch on the braaaain. And I used another SenshiStock picture. Photo references are WIN!

[livejournal.com profile] elaby is a zombie this week. *nods*

I finally made some actual icons with those Starsky & Hutch bases I posted a while ago. I'm such a godawfully slow icon maker e_e It takes me about an hour to make one, because I get so waffly over the font and the color and, well, everything. And then I always want to wait and post a bunch together, but it takes me so long to make even a couple that I end up having them sit on my hard drive for months. And then they end up getting so old that I cringe when I see them *laughs* So inexplicably I throw them up on my LJ. Anyway! Icons! Starsky & Hutch! Of a friendshippy omgloveyouman sort of bent.

[livejournal.com profile] liek_whoa86 recently put up a treasure trove of Lestrade icons, so I have to go upload them to my LJ now :D

Finally, zomg! I've been drawing little chibi illustrations of the many reasons I love Starsky & Hutch, and I finally got them all scanned and cleaned up and slapped into one long image a la that thing I did comparing various Holmes and Watson actors.

So! Onward!

I got this meme from [livejournal.com profile] janeturenne, and she asked me about some quite wonderful things :)

Reply to this meme by yelling "Words!" and I will give you five words that remind me of you. Then post them in your LJ and explain what they mean to you.

Cut, because I tend to go on. I discuss Holmesslash, but since I just talk about my definition of the term and about the fandom, it's safe for non-slashers.

Okay, I wrote up some actually coherent thoughts (read: squee) about House of Cards and To Play the King.

This series is truly awesome. I've seen House of Cards and To Play the King so far (although like an idiot I've spoiled myself on The Final Cut... oh well) and they were both fantastic. The characters are brilliant, and the plot is very interesting, even though I'm sadly ignorant of how politics work in the UK so I feel like I'd get more out of it if I knew what all the terms meant ^^;; As always, though, it's the characters I like the best :3

Cut for spoilers and lengthy squee )

As an aside: "Starsky's Lady" is the most depressing episode of Starsky & Hutch EVER. So far. And there wasn't even any hugging*. Get with the program, people.

*There was essentially a declaration of love, but we've had those already. I don't doubt they love each other; I'd just like some comfort to go with all the hurt, plzkthx. I mean, the getting hammered and playing Monopoly was comforting, but... hugs. Time to watch another episode and hope there's lighthearted banter.

I think a happy Solomin Watson icon is in order.

I just finished watching the first four episodes of House of Cards, a BBC show from the 90's that's essentially RIII* in Parliament. They even make references. Lots of them. It's SO INCREDIBLY GOOD, and I need to write more about it when I'm not falling asleep. But seriously. Ian Richardson is gold, and like eighteen times better than he was as Holmes in the HOUN I reviewed at some point here, and Colin Jeavons is in it and I could seriously listen to him talk for hours. I don't care what he's saying; I just love the man's voice. He plays such a despicable guy XD Well, seriously, they all do. This feeds my love of eeeeevil characters so SO much. It's also got a fair dose of "holy squick!" to go along with it o_o Which I could have done without, but the disturbingness adds to the drama.

*I'm using RIII to distinguish the play from Richard III the historical person.

Okay, Starsky and Hutch quote of the day. They were undercover throughout this episode, Starsky as an Argentine dancing instructor named Ramone and Hutch as a Texan named Charlie who was learning to dance. At the end, the famous old movie star, Ginger something, who owned the dancing studio came in to talk to them at the precinct, incidentally interrupting Starsky's enthusiastic attempts to teach Hutch to dance. After they talked plot, this ensued:

Ginger: I wish you'd come back to the studio. [Lady Starsky was teaching to dance] really misses you. She says nobody dips like Ramone.
Starsky: *eyebrow waggle* *makes some suggestive comment*
Hutch: *rolls eyes*
Ginger: Bye-bye, boys! *leaves*
Starsky: *to Hutch* Nobody dips like Ramone!
Hutch: Nobody's a dip like Ramone. *chuckles, highly amused with self*
Starsky: *grabs him and dips him low, repeating back Hutch's Texan catch-phrase of the episode* If you've got it, flaunt it, boy.

I love them so much I can't even begin to express it.

[edit: Eee, clip of this scene for you! It was made by [livejournal.com profile] enednoviel and I grabbed the icon from [livejournal.com profile] caitirin's user icons page. *gleesplode*

I now own three seasons of Starsky & Hutch :3 We've been watching the second. I can't believe how adorable they are XD Besides, I'm somehow fond of cop shows even aside from cuddlesome detectives. The cuddlesome detectives are my favorite part, though.

Before I gave [livejournal.com profile] _melisande_ back her DVDs of the first season, I screencapped the heck out of them. I'm going to be making a couple of icons, but I seem to suck at making icons out of photographs as opposed to artwork or animation stills, so I wanted to put up the bases I made. 101 bases, even! Wow, and I didn't try for a specific number or anything. There are a lot of similar shots and ones where I couldn't decide which way I wanted to crop it, so I did both.

The icons focus on The Relationship (as [livejournal.com profile] coastal_spirit terms it, a title I'm going to appropriate for my own use XD) but there are a bunch of just Starsky and just Hutch. Short descriptions of episodes with each one, so you know what's going on :3

We're officially out of Starsky and Hutch episodes XD But that's okay, because I'm using my B&N gift card to get some seasons on DVD (they're surprisingly cheap, bwee!) Anyone in the area - Barnes & Noble is having a sale starting June 2, I believe, and the dude at the store told me it'll be going for most of June, where you can buy two DVDs and get a third free. This also counts with box sets and seasons of TV shows.

I need to search LJ for icon communities and make some screencaps. [livejournal.com profile] caitirin is having a marathon crocheting session, working on this awesome shawl, and one of the episodes we just watched was one where Starsky got injected with some poison and had 24 hours to live. I knew this was the first season, for heaven's sake, but it was so freaking stressful XD I need to watch it again now that I know how it turns out so that I can appreciate all the hugging and hand-holding and declarations of friendship.

And only tangentially related - 70's detectives to 30's detectives to a hard-boiled style of narration to Corwin - I've been rereading the first five Amber books, like you do, and I keep noticing all of these new things. Like the fact that Corwin has this long mental monologue about how his current basic philosophy depends on the idea that people can truly change, not just modify existing traits, and then in the next book, he finds out that Julian - with whom he's had a relationship of constant mutual animosity since, as far as we know, birth - no longer hates him and actually wants to help him. Ahaha continuity = love. It's so nice to be rewarded for paying attention when you read something. I <3 these books.

Man, did I ever have a wonderful Memorial Day weekend.

On Saturday, we ran around to a bunch of antique shops so I could look for Victorian things, and it was really a lot of fun. For all that everything else at antique shops is really expensive, old photographs are cheap. And don't take up much space, which is always a good thing. All evening we watched The Melancholy of Suzumiya Haruhi, which seriously just keeps getting more interesting, and more Princess Tutu, which is adorable and crazy and full of things that make us think of Utena and Tenshi ni Narumon (little red shoes, what?).

Sunday we did a scavenger-hunt type geocache in Portsmouth in the rain. We found all of the clues, saw bagpipers, and went to the Loaf and Ladle for lunch. The Loaf and Ladle has moved into the space where this wonderful deli I used to go to with [livejournal.com profile] coastal_spirit was up until I went to college. There were several restaurants in there in between, and they were all very much unlike Goldi's, but the Loaf and Ladle is an acceptable substitute :3 And Monday, we went to look for another geocache (which we unfortunately didn't find) and I got my new pocketwatch.

In between I played Wind Waker and on Sunday and Monday evening we had Starsky and Hutch marathons. The wonderful [livejournal.com profile] _melisande_ lent us the first season, bringer of all things awesome that she is, because [livejournal.com profile] coastal_spirit recommended the series to me. I imagine her thought process went something like this: "My daughter likes detectives. My daughter especially likes physically affectionate detectives. ...Why hasn't she seen Starsky and Hutch yet?"

Yeah, okay, I love it.

On I go )
