elaby: (LotR - Aragorn defeated)
This has been living on my hard drive for a couple of years now, and whenever I feel like writing angsty fanfic I take it out and poke at it. I'm generally far too embarrassed to post LotR fic. Not only is the source material ridiculously dear to me, it also means that - if I'm going to follow my usual habit and try to write fic in the style of the original - things could get quite wordy and the narrative mode isn't for everyone. Emotion in LotR is treated with remarkable frankness, though, and that lends itself to angstfic like none of my other fandoms do. I knew someday I would get over my reticence to post this and accept it as something that I had a damn fun time writing, even if it's not up to my usual self-imposed standards of subtlety.

Also, we've been watching Gone with the Wind over the last couple of days, so you can blame my motivation for posting this now on Clark Gable's valiant attempt to emote. Or maybe, more accurately, on Olivia de Havilland's encouragement ("You will cry in this scene, you will, and you will be wonderful or I will kick you in the shin").

Title: Downhill
Fandom: Lord of the Rings (bookverse, with one teeny movie reference. See if you can spot it.)
Genre: Angstariffic, hurt/comfort
Words: 1,625
Characters: Aragorn, Legolas (slashy if you like, epic Fellowship-love regardless)
Notes: This takes place in The Two Towers, while Aragorn, Legolas, and Gimli are tracking Merry and Pippin. Reading the books as an adult, I was surprised how I never noticed how much crap Aragorn has to deal with.

Unfortunately - or perhaps fortunately - while I can try to emulate Tolkien's prose style I do not dare to attempt any singing. )
elaby: (Gackt - Alone)
We finished watching Ultraman last night! I'm so sad that there isn't any more XD Wouldn't you know it, in the last DVD-and-a-half they really started focusing on the characters and having major developmenty awesomeness. And, like, continuity. They kept going "You remember the time we fought *insert monster name*? Why don't we try that tactic!" They also had a complete parody episode, where they were all extremely silly and adorable and even Ultraman got his share of fun poked at him. This was of course followed up by SUPER SERIOUS episodes of super seriousness. *pets Arashi*

Sooo. I wrote a fic. I don't know why this fandom isn't bigger! It's like--! It could engender Star Trek-level fannishness! Maybe all the fandom works are in Japanese.

Fandom: Ultraman
Characters: Arashi, Ide
Words: 921
Categorization: Friendship, slash-if-you-like, sap
Summary: After the episode "The Snowy Mountain of Illusion," Ide is still troubled. Arashi isn't troubled; he's just trying to get some sleep.

Quick summary of episode for everyone besides [livejournal.com profile] caitirin and [livejournal.com profile] coastal_spirit (and anyone else who happens to have seen this show): Under here )

After 'The Snowy Mountain of Illusion' )
elaby: (Holmes and Watson - JB&DB arm in arm)
I started writing this fic, like... a frillion years ago XD Okay, maybe last summer or something like that. It's the skating fic I kept talking about! It's taken me several months to get the Holmesian mojo to finish it, which is rather pathetic, but it's done and that's all that matters XD I quite like it, after all that. It's a companion piece to Musica Universalis, my other winter fic.

Title: Skating in Kensington Gardens
Characters: Holmes and Watson
Words: 1660
Summary: Watson convinces Holmes to go ice-skating at the Park.
Rating: G. Ridiculously, fluffily G. As usual, slash if you like or friendship if you like. I prefer to think of it as both, myself.
Warnings: Holmes and Watson acting utterly married? I don't think that needs a warning XD
Notes: This is for my lovely [livejournal.com profile] caitirin, who asked for Holmes and Watson ice-skating, and suggested just about everything in here that makes it good. <3 Most of the background information I used to write this was from www.victorianlondon.org, and Curiosities of London Life by Charles Manby Smith.

I don't think it would have ever happened if the ragged boy who accosted us in Kensington Gardens had not been the smaller brother of McGowan of the Irregulars. )
elaby: (Little My - Skates)
[livejournal.com profile] elaineofshalott recommended this fic a couple of days ago, but it's so worth reccing (and reading) again.

"We Are Six", by Nope, is an Eloise/Calvin and Hobbes crossover, written in Eloise-style, and it's possibly the most PERFECT crossover I've ever seen. It's pretty short, so go read it now! Even if you've only read Calvin and Hobbes or only read Eloise, it's so worth it. And if you love both, it's even more fabulous. I'm looking at you, [livejournal.com profile] coastal_spirit.

Speaking of [livejournal.com profile] coastal_spirit, I would like you to know that when I read any Calvin and Hobbes strips, especially the early ones, all the dialogue is in your voice! I wonder why? XD
elaby: (Holmes and Watson - I'm for you)
One of my absolute favorite people on this green earth, [livejournal.com profile] janeturenne, is having a birthday today :D And in celebration of the occasion, I have written her a fic. Janie, acushla, you make the whole world better by being in it - a small but rather important-to-me part of that being my life, my writing, and my fannish enjoyment in general. *huggaluvs*

Title: Entirely Natural
Characters: Holmes/Watson
Words: 1541
Summary: Holmes falls ill after the close of a case.
Rating: PG
Warnings: I don't want to spoil anything, but those who don't like slash might want to steer clear of this one.
Notes: Shameless hurt/comfort. This is fairly early in the timeline, I think, certainly pre-SIGN. Most of the dialogue (or non-dialogue, as the case may be) is Clive Merrison's doing. And in the end it is all utterly yours, Jane-my-dear.

It was a combination of events, really. )
elaby: (Usagi - Yaoi)
It's a gorgeous slightly snowy day, just enough to be pretty but not dangerous to drive in, and I had a wonderful, wonderful Christmas, and I received the most adorable, perfect Bunny and Raffles fic as my Yuletide gift!

The Holiday Heist

The voices are impeccable, the narration is deliciously clever, the caper is fantastic, and the Baffles slash is adorable and perfect and heart-warming and BWEEE XD I'm so lucky!

I hope everyone who celebrates Christmas had a wonderful Christmas, and I hope everyone regardless of celebration practices had a wonderful December 25th and continues to have a wonderful 26th :D
elaby: (Saturninus - bitch)
Ah, internets! I have barely known thee for the whole of November, and I have missed thee!

Someday, I swear, I'll catch up on all the wonderful things you lot have posted in the past month and which I've tagged "to read". But Nano is over, and Yuletide is looming (holycrap, how many days do I have left? O_O), and I'm back fresh from the far reaches of Michigan with new fandoms pinging around in my brain.

As our mission when visiting [livejournal.com profile] _melisande_ was to do everything possible to give her a break from schoolwork, we watched a lot of television. And, I hardly need say as it's [livejournal.com profile] _melisande_ we're talking about, it was mind-bogglingly awesome television.

I now have under my belt:

- All four seasons of the new Doctor Who
- The first season of Rome
- The first season of Torchwood, plus a disc or two of the second season

We didn't watch all of this over Thanksgiving (I'm not sure we were there for as many hours as that would take XD) but we did finish several milestones: the last episodes of season four of Doctor Who (which means I'm caught up with everything released outside the UK!), the last episodes of Rome's first season, and the last episodes of Torchwood's first season. I feel a great deal less frightened of being spoiled by the internets now, although that doesn't mean I'm going to go recklessly wandering around. There's still a whole season of Torchwood to see, not to mention the miniseries, and another season of Rome, and season five of Doctor Who, whenever that comes out over here.

But anyway! I am sated with ridiculously good storytelling and characters and dialogue and OMFG I love television. And in commemoration, I wrote two thingies. One is a double drabble for Rome, and the other is... I don't know what you'd call 250 words, but it's Doctor Who. I wanted to do one for Torchwood, but I find that I am not yet good enough to come up with the kind of lines worthy of Jack Harkness.

Fandom: Rome
Characters: Pullo
Words: 200
Warnings: Spoilers up through episode 11, "The Spoils," the second-to-last episode of season one.

When Titus Pullo awoke... )

Fandom: Doctor Who
Characters: The Doctor, Donna
Words: 250
Warnings: Reference to "The Parting of the Ways" (not sure I'd call it spoilers, as it doesn't exactly tell you much). Set sometime in the fourth season.

The Doctor was wedged in an open compartment... )

Why the heck do I have no Doctor Who icons? This one will have to do as a Rome substitute *pets Saturninus*

Fic update!

Skating fic: I haven't worked on this since the last time I updated, mostly because we had to forego writing night this week onnacounta taking a house-buying seminar.

Giant row fic: 1,473 words! \o/ Of actual prose! From the beginning of the story! So that means I actually started, as opposed to sitting around poking at dialogue and trying to perfect my Victorian syntax. This is progress, trust me. Did I mention that I'm writing this thing in the third person? O_o;; That's a first for me and Holmes fic. It has to be, but I'm less confident about my writing in this genre when it's not first-person. For right now, I'm just getting down concepts within my sentences and I'll work on finessing the language later.

Life update!

Yes, so, that house-buying seminar we're taking... terrifying, or extremely terrifying? Also exhilarating. Last night was the "for god's sake get your finances under control before you try to buy a house" night, and tonight was "mortgage lingo and closing cost trauma" night. (I kid. Last night showed us how to budget and ascertain our financial situations before looking into getting approved for a loan, and tonight went through how one applies for a mortgage and all the programs that exist in the area, which is lots, for helping first-time buyers who don't make much money get really awesome deals. This is good, as that = us.)

I'm going out after work with my coworkers tomorrow, which will be another new experience. The last time I did this it was with the gang from the Writing Center, all of whom I really loved, and my coworkers now are kind of a whole lot different from the way I am. I think I'll have a decent time, though.

Fic update

elaby: (Elaby - Arg! Sketch)
Fic update! To make me feel better.

Skating fic: 1,265 words, and almost done. Hello there, brick wall. What the heck? This is utter, shameless, tooth-rotting fluff we're writing here - this particular genre isn't supposed to have brick walls. And it's not like I don't know what happens next. I do. It's just that my writing has suddenly taken a turn towards the abysmal. When you write something that looks okay now but you have this niggling feeling you're going to look at it tomorrow and wonder what on earth possessed you, it might possibly be an indication that it's time to be done for the night!

Lestrade-Holmes-post-Hiatus-giant-row-fic: 1,508 words of notes, by god. *eyes them suspiciously* And 356 words of mostly random disjointed dialogue. I need to work on this hardcore, but I'm determined to finish the skating fic first. It does give me little shivers of excitement when I think about writing it, though XD At least, some parts do. I'm a little afraid of the others o_o
elaby: (Holmes and Watson - L&S Baskerville)
This is the first of two ficlets I have planned that feature Holmes and Watson in the winter :) I thought it would be very short, but it ended up a bit longer than I intended. Otherwise, though, it turned out the way I hoped.

Title: Musica Universalis
Rating: G. Oh, so very G. And fluffy.
Character(s): Holmes and Watson
Summary: Temperatures dip below freezing, and the town is transformed.
Warnings: None whatsoever.
Words: 1,627
Author's Notes: This was inspired by contemporary accounts of a snowbound London. It takes place in early 1896, probably - after "The Bruce-Partington Plans," at least.

Winter in London )
elaby: (Holmes and Watson - Back on me)
This is that fic I've been working on recently. I started it originally as an excuse to write one scene (I'm sure you'll know which one when you read it) and it kind of got longer than I expected it to be. I also wanted to write something for [livejournal.com profile] watsons_woes that didn't involve Watson's emotional angst, but physical pain or illness. Anyway, here we go :)

Title: Things Unspoken
Rating: PG for violence and mild language
Character(s): Holmes and Watson (slashy if you want it to be, friendship if you don't.)
Summary: Next time, Watson will know better than to assume a task Holmes sends him on will be uneventful.
Warnings: None
Word Count: 2,714
Author's Notes: This is one of my rare attempts at in medias res; I'm usually far too fond of longwinded set-up, but in this case I dove right into the middle of things. It takes place in 1885; make of that what you will.

Things Unspoken )
elaby: (Holmes and Watson - Forward ho)
Finally, I've got another drabble/drawble meme request finished! This one is for [livejournal.com profile] liek_woah86 :D She asked for Holmes-and-Watson warm fluffies, involving them getting dressed up smart to go somewhere. This was such fun to write! I had Clive Merrison and Michael Williams in my head the whole time, so if you're inclined, you can imagine their voices.

I've been chomped on by the Holmes fic bug again :3 I even started working on another one today.

Characters: Holmes and Watson
Rating: G like whoa.
Warnings: None
Word Count: 1,035
Author's Notes: This is absolutely warm and fluffy, with nothing more serious than Holmes's occasional good-natured snarkiness.

An Evening Out )
elaby: (SaitouxSano - love)
I'm still working on that drabble/drawble meme, I swear! Here's my fic for [livejournal.com profile] coastal_spirit :D She requested any combination of Kenshin, Sano, and Saitou. I give you all of them! And their variously complicated relationships with each other.

I hope you like it, Mama! I had such fun writing it XD

Title: Reckless
Fandom: Rurouni Kenshin
Characters: Sanosuke, Saitou, Kenshin (and a small Yumi cameo)
Warnings: Language.
Words: 750
Notes: This has got two halves - the first one takes place after Sano fights Anji in Shishio's mansion in the Kyoto arc, and the second takes place during the first fight with Enishi in the Jinchu arc. Ahou means approximately "moron" in the Kansai dialect of Japanese. It's Saitou's pet name favorite insult for Sano.

Reckless )
elaby: (Holmes and Watson - I'm for you)
The second result of that meme! A ficlet for [livejournal.com profile] janeturenne, who could not have possibly given me a better prompt if I begged her. She asked for Holmes/Watson and Shakespeare, with extra points if I got Holmes to call Watson his Horatio. I had such fun with this, and I really hope it's everything you wanted :)

Pairing: Holmes/Watson, possibly the slashiest thing I've ever written. Predictably, the slashiest thing I've ever written turned out very mild indeed.
Rating: I dunno. PG for cuddling Victorians?
Warnings: Mushiness. Gratuitous Shakespeare.

Word Count: 834
Author's Notes: I have found that I love writing literary allusions into other fictional universes quite beyond reason.

I will wear him in my heart's core )
elaby: (Watson - Dual Watsons)
I wrote this fic a couple of weeks ago for the [livejournal.com profile] watsons_woes challenge, and now that it's all over, I thought I'd post it in my own journal as well. I won second place :3 *joy like whoa* And the prize was an extremely gorgeous background made by [livejournal.com profile] endgegner07!

Title: The Derbyshire Street Workhouse
Rating: G
Character(s): Holmes and Watson
Summary: The challenge was to use the prompt I did not dare look at him or even move, and could only hope that he would not notice my reaction. If my secret were discovered, undoubtedly his face would sport the mocking half-smile he bestowed upon a cowardly client. And he would be right; a man such as he would find my fear ridiculous...
Warnings: Not much. Social commentary?
Word Count: 2,734
Author's Notes: This involves a fairly early Holmes and Watson, still getting to know each other a few years into their acquaintance. It also explores a little bit of Watson's time in medical school. I <3 my Victorian London reference books.

The Derbyshire Street Workhouse )
elaby: (Holmes and Watson - JB&DB arm in arm)
I've written my first drabble (ficlet, actually) from my post yesterday! That quick, too. I hope to actually get all of these done in a timely manner, unlike that first kiss meme where I took over a year to write [livejournal.com profile] minyan's Horatio and Laertes fic ^^;;

This one is for the marvelous and talented [livejournal.com profile] kcs2008! It's Holmes and Watson friendship, with a rainy night and hugging and I truly hope warm fuzzies. The angst sort of got away from me, but I think it ended with warmth :) It's a missing scene from "The Five Orange Pips," the night after Holmes and Watson find out that Openshaw's been murdered.

In case anyone hasn't read this story, here's what you need to know: Clickity )

736 words, rated G. The only possible warnings I can think of are slight darkness and Holmes having self-destructive thoughts. I entertained the idea of trying this in the third person, but I apparently fail at that, so it's Watson's POV, as usual. I hope you like it! :D

What Sort of Man )
elaby: (Watson and Lestrade - CJ&EH Empty House)
Why does Holmes fic take me so darn long to write? Ah well! I'm not complaining. This one is a product of my current fascination with Lestrade, although it's really more about Watson, and it has an actual mystery in it, unlike any of my other Holmes stories.

I babbled to [livejournal.com profile] caitirin a great deal during the writing of this, because I couldn't keep my own plot straight (she helped with that), and we had this conversation in the dining hall one night:

[livejournal.com profile] elaby: I started a Lestrade fic today.
[livejournal.com profile] caitirin: Ooh! I love Lestrade fics! ... for some reason. I blame you.
[livejournal.com profile] elaby: Hee! I love Lestrade.
[livejournal.com profile] caitirin: Lestrade hits on Watson!
[livejournal.com profile] elaby: That's Russian Lestrade. I love Granada Lestrade.
[livejournal.com profile] caitirin: That's because he makes a good OT3.
[livejournal.com profile] elaby: XD My story just has Lestrade and Watson, though. It's while Holmes is "dead."
[livejournal.com profile] caitirin: It's an OT2, then.
[livejournal.com profile] elaby: It's more like an OT3 less one.
[livejournal.com profile] caitirin: It's an OTsad! *madface*
[livejournal.com profile] elaby: ^^;;;

It did rather turn out to be an OTsad, if you consider "one true pairing/three/whatever" to encompass awkward prickly unsure friendships and utterly devoted lifemates. Anyway, without further ado.

Title: The Molesey Mystery
Rating: PG for mild swearing and the results of violence
Characters: Watson, Lestrade, Holmes in absentia
Disclaimer: All characters created by ACD belong to their copyright holder(s), not me.
Summary: When Holmes returned in 1894, he told Lestrade that he had handled the Molesey Mystery "fairly well." This may have been because Lestrade had some help.
Warnings: Hiatus-fic, so there's quite a bit of unhappiness involved.
Word Count: 5,859
Notes: Lestrade narrates. This is set in the late spring of 1891, about a month after Holmes's "death." It was inspired by the implication in the Granada series that Watson worked with Lestrade fairly often during Holmes's absence. This is also kind of a much longer prequel to my ficlet Most Unexpected, about Lestrade's reaction to Holmes's telegram notifying him of his return. As such, it also features Constable MacPherson, hopefully less put-upon this time.

I didn't believe a word of it when I read it in the papers. )
elaby: (Holmes and Watson - I'm for you)
More fic! Yes, that's just about all I do these days.

I wrote this for the new community [livejournal.com profile] watsons_woes, which is, as you may be able to guess, a hurt/comfort community.

Title: Patience
Rating: G
Character(s): Watson and Holmes, slashy if you want
Word Count: 1407
Author's Notes: Shameless angst. Possible fluff, depending on how you define it. This is sort of an alternate scene from the end of "The Empty House" when Holmes and Watson come back to Baker Street after Holmes's return and Colonel Moran's arrest.

Patience )
elaby: (Holmes and Watson - Back on me)
You know how sometimes you write things, and you have them mouldering on your hard drive for months and you just poke at them occasionally, and they might need just a paragraph or something to end them but other things come along to take your attention and you just never end up finishing them? Well, this is one of those, and I finally made myself pay attention to it long enough to finish the darn thing.

Oy, it gave me trouble, it did. It still does, but I had to either post it or throw it out a window, so I'm posting it. [livejournal.com profile] cox_and_co implemented a pretty straightforward fic header system recently, and I'm just going to reproduce most of that here.

Title: Baker Street, 3:25 a.m.
Rating: G
Pairing(s): Holmes/Watson (as usual it can be interpreted as slashy or not, but there is sightly more physical contact in this one.)
Disclaimer: All characters created by ACD belong to their copyright holder(s), not me.
Summary: Watson is not alone in being awake at ungodly hours, and this is something he appreciates more than he thought he would.
Word Count: 2,835
Author's Notes: Watson POV. The timeline confuses me when it comes to placing "Hound of the Baskervilles" and "The Copper Beeches," but this story is set after them and assumes that they both take place before "Sign of the Four."

Baker Street, 3:25 a.m. )
elaby: (Holmes and Watson - H&W)
More fic! Not old, this time. I have all of these stories that just need the last five lines or so, and I just need to finish them f'god's sake.

Title: "A Treat for the Gods"
Rating: G
Words: 1248
Summary: The first time Watson hears Holmes truly play the violin, his reaction is stronger than he expected.
Notes: I'm fascinated lately by the idea of just-met Holmes and Watson, when they didn't really know each other yet and they were both pretty young. I think this may be Vasily Livanov's fault, because his performance as Holmes reminds me of the early stories. I find writing about their relationship when they're feeling it out at the beginning just as fun as when it's long-established :3
